Tips and tricks for getting myself published in one of your magazines...?
Beyond just "make it look good," what would you suggest I do to make it more likely that one of my photos/stories will end up in one of your fine publications?

Inappropriate? For photos one of the easiest steps is to let as many people know about your submission as possible. Once it's in a theme you can use one of our promotional widgets for your blog or personal site so people can come and vote on your photo directly from your own site.
Currently the widget is Javascript only but we're working on non-js versions of the widgets for sites like facebook, myspace and other sites that don't let you embed Javascript.

Inappropriate?I'd like to add to this from a more editorial perspective. If you are really serious about getting published, do your homework on what people are submitting to the theme, and do your best to be original. For those of us who spend all day with the photos, it seems to become more clear what we're looking for after putting in the time with the whole set.
Also, write stories! And not just photo essays. Writing a good, basic, product review of something photography related is probably the easiest way to get into the magazine—and don't forget that that includes your sample shots with the camera! How-tos, Ten Tips, and Post-Processings (craft-related articles about what you do with your prints long after the photo is taken) are also story types where we always need more quality content.
Good luck, and thanks for the interest!

Inappropriate? And I'd like to add to this from a contributing photographers point a view. Obviously doing reasearch and creating an original great image will get you noticed and published. But JPG isn't just about getting published in a world wide magazine, its also a photography community that is made up of professional and aspring photographers. Get involved with the community by commenting, favoriting, and becoming contacts with others on the site. Its a great way to give constructive feedback to others while also making everyone aware of who you are, what you think is good photography and what you have to offer as a photographer.

Inappropriate?I have to agree with Nicole. I look to JPG and the community as an opportunity to grow. So I would encourage everyone to ask their contacts questions like:
How did you do that?
What made you take that shot?
What lens did you use?
Where was that taken?
We've got a great community of artists here, and I for one take every opportunity to learn from them along the way...and if your lucky you just might end up with you photo in the magazine.
