how do participating - and by participating i mean participating in giving regular feedback/favoriting to others - jpgers feel about those jpgers who expect to reap publishing payoff while not having "enough time" to participate in their own community. some even claim not to be here for the publishing but for the inspiration they find, yet they have few faves and manage to post pics to every theme that opens.
and lastly, should the jpg staff utilize the favoriting/commenting/contact tools more often considering they obviously expect us to do the same and quite of few of them make it into the 'zine themselves? let me hear you people; whatever hole you've crawled out of.
With all the negative talk (and fixing the things that we don't like), I did want to take a minute to be able to outline the things that I love about JPG, that make me come back here. When I joined JPG (in December 2006, yikes) I didn't really know what this community was about, I hadn't heard of the magazine before (I don't really shop in bookstores) and the whole concept was tantalising.
And during this time I've seen JPG go through a whole lot of changes! Introducing the comments was one of my favourite changes. I don't comment "a lot" but when I do I hope it's meaningful to the photographer. I check my recent activity all the time. I like seeing what's popular, what people overlook.. it's really helped me push my photography in different directions.
I like how easy it is to discover new people! It's got the major social networking aspect to it, but it doesn't rely or depend on you communicating with people you already know! Amazing. I've brought quite a few people to JPG but the overwhelming majority are people I just stumbled upon - or they stumbled upon me. I've found some absolutely fantastic people this way, and a whole lot of photography that has truly inspired me to try more.
When my contacts get published I send them notes congratulating them. It's exciting to me to see them in print. I'm not new to the publishing business and I've done a lot of printwork before; but JPG makes it new and exciting. I was thrilled when I was published! I was giddy! I think I may have been more excited about that than the time I had my first gallery showing - ahahaha!
And I've had great interaction with the staff. I really appreciate it, guys. I've emailed in a few times with questions/concerns/praise, and I've always gotten a personal note back. I've had some stuff removed (from a theme/from the site) and I just take it in stride. I try to not let anything get under my skin as it is. I know you guys are busy... I'm busy too.
Okay I'm done babbling. I just thought there should be some focus on the awesome parts of JPG too.
