Bandwidth of a2btv is getting worse
Once upon a time (about a year and a half ago) I used to be able to get a steady 1700kbps stream to Australia. However in that time things have progressively gotten worse and I'm currently only getting 180kbps or worse at peak US viewing times and maybe 500kbps off peak viewing times. A speed test to your current bandwidth provider says I can receive a steady stream of data at a little over 5000kbps. What's going on? Every proxy I've used has only ever made the stream unwatchable below 100kbps.
a2btv was once a great product, but now I couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Inappropriate?Hi Rob,
Sorry you're having problems getting good speeds. Since we've upgraded our proxy bandwidth, we've only gotten reports of our speeds getting better. If you're getting speeds at 100 Kbps, there must be additional factors that are causing you problems. (You should be able to receive better stream than that using the public Internet.)
Can we set a phone call with our tech support department to go over your settings?
In the future, the fastest way to get a response for tech support issues, is to e-mail support@a2bTV.com.
Best,

Inappropriate?I'm not sure how you guys setup your proxies but all variations of them so far have not improved any speeds within Australia. I've used many connections in Many locations around Australia and in London and I've not been able to achieve the speeds we used to get along time ago when I first signed up to the service. So far having the proxy off seems to be the best option. It's currently 7:00am in California and I'm getting an unwatchable 64kbps without the proxy and with the proxy on I get 1kbps (no video at all) just "buffering". Also I've tried many configurations from disabling the optimizer as typically that hogs more bandwidth. However funny in this case it makes the stream more stable as bandwidth seems to shoot up and down very rapidly. Anyhow, name any setting in my sling player I've messed with it and it just wont make anything better.
I'm not sure if this can be fixed with a phone call, I'd say I'm pretty competent with IT related video streaming issues (as I'm a network/system engineer) and I setup some streaming at work using DVB-T cards (digital TV) and VLC streaming servers as well as sling box servers of our own based around the world. Hitting around 700kbps from HK, and the bandwidth to Asia is crappier than it is to Los Angeles.
All I can say is that the way it was setup 2 years ago is by far the best performance I ever got! -
Inappropriate?Rob,
We have customers that currently stream regularly over 3000Kbps in Australia. I'd like to go over your settings with you and make sure you're using the best server for the Pacific region and check the rest of your settings.
There is also the possibility that your ISP is shaping your Slingbox stream speeds. (This occasionally occurs to our customers - I'd guess about 2-3% of them each year.) A phone call to complain to your ISP will usually get them to remove you from any shaping. I'd like to talk to you in more detail to determine if that's a possibility.
Let me know when you're available for a call.
Best,

Inappropriate?Thank you Greg for your speedy response and phone call. Using the old proxy 66.186.55.90 (only to be used if having new proxy issues) has boosted my stream to 2000kbps! I hope to hear about a resolve for the new proxy soon to boost my speeds further.

Inappropriate?after increasing my bandwidth settings I'm topping out around 5000kbps!
