I am tired of AIM telling me I am logged in from 2 places
Whenever I sign in from iChat or any other client from 2 different places, the aolsystemmsg thingy tells me - annoyingly - that I am signed in twice. I can't even block it.

Inappropriate?I know I have this problem. It is annoying. I wonder if the idea is that you would be alerted if someone was using your account. How likely is that?
I’m with you
-
Inappropriate?i don't mind it telling me (it's confusing when you can be logged into one service multiple ways), but i do mind that it's a huge message and that it asks me to sign out. Maybe just a quick "Hi from AIM, just wanted to let you know that you're now signed into two account. Have a nice day."
-
Inappropriate?Right off the bat disclaimer: I don't directly work on the AIM client, but I'm in the AIM family, discussion is good, anything posted here will be heard, and I'd love to get more AIM designers involved soon.
Leslie: I like the idea of the messaging being simplified and/or figuring out if the message could be suppressed or dismissed if it's coming from the same IP address maybe?
Everyone: Would love to understand when people are getting this message (are you using multiple services at once? adium, AIM, Meebo?) and if any time it has actually been helpful. It clearly serves a security need, but there could be a better experience lurking around the corner for everyone.
Would be cool to keep this topic open for feedback instead of an overall resolution yet, anyone else want to chime in?
This is my first get satisfaction contribution, thanks! -
Hi Karl, We're thrilled to have you here on Get Satisfaction. Let us know if we can assist you in any way. -
Hi Karl! Glad you're here. I think it would help a lot if the message was simply more human. It's always good to help people understand what's going on (sometimes I don't realize I've got AIM on in multiple places). :) -
I would love to remove it completely as it ads no security whatsoever in my eyes. It is purely an annoyance.
Thanx!

I often disconnect by closing my computer, and reconnect minutes later. I use the latest verion of iChat, on the most updated OS X, with a perfectly running PowerBook, etc. Every Single Time I get that irritating message telling me I'm logging in at two places. It ruins the experience. -
I'd like an option to disable or block this message, or maybe have it recognize if one of the devices is a mobile device. Every time I open aim on my computer I get a message there, and then a few seconds later my phone rings and i've got the message there too... I know my phone's logged in, it ALWAYS is logged in, stop telling me. -
Karl, one year later and no resolution? -
Inappropriate?Hi karl,
Thanks for jumping in here! I have the same issue and also find it mildly annoying. For me it happens with a couple different scenarios:
1. I'm signed into my Gmail which also now supports AIM and then I launch Adium.
2. I've got Adium running on my MacBook and then log into my home desktop PC and launch my IM client there. Or vice versa.
I think making the messaging a little friendlier and more optional sounding would help a lot. If I'm aware I'm logged into AIM from two places I don't want to feel like I'm doing something wrong by not signing out of one of them. However, I do think it's a nice security courtesy that AIM informs you.
I’m glad we're re-surfacing this topic
-
Inappropriate?I get the "Signed-in in two places" message, but I don't know where the other place could be. I don't use AIM anywhere but through my laptop iChat app. It would be more useful as a security message if it could tell you what the other location could be: machine name, IP address or whatever.
-
Yeah, that makes sense. The message should give you useful information about the other location. I wonder what info they can display? -
Inappropriate?AOL v.29a: Buddy's Revenge (http://is.gd/18dZ)
The AOLSystemMSG is entering pop culture! This is some kind of horror story based around our good friend.
I’m absolutely tired of this broken feature
-
Inappropriate?I find this annoying too. Many times I leave my desktop machine logged in and hit the road and when I log in from my laptop, it pops up or I'll log in from my phone and get a message I have to clear right away. I wish I could block it.
-
Inappropriate? At least give me the right to block it!
I don't need the AOLSystemMsg Notice, and it is the most annoying and for my purposes useless message i've seen in years.
Okay make it standard but let us block it...
I’m apathic...
-
Inappropriate?I always get this message, and to my knowledge, I'm not signed in two places. I tried changing my password, and I still get the message.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Hi @Willie This too is a distraction to my work. I use Pidgin on my Win Desktop and Fring on my WinMo phone. And yes I am logged in twice but have no problem with this. The problem I have is with being reminded and getting bounced back from device to desktop with enabling and re-enabling AIM. Then I tried to actually do what it says to do which is IM back 1 and it logs me out automatically. Then I tried to enter 2 and it accepts this but comes back with the message that I am logged in more than once. Man...
-
Inappropriate?I get this message all the time, and I'm not signed in in two places. It seems to happen when my internet connection is momentarily disconnected. This usually happens at work, on my laptop, when I'm on the office's wi-fi.
-
Inappropriate?I am also faced with the same message. I understand the company is aware of this, could someone please fix it or tell us how to fix it.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It appears as if only one screen name from the overall account can be signed on at one time. It's not that you have signed on using your screen name somewhere and failed to sign off. It's simply that someone from your family is signed online, and it blocks more than one person from signing on at the same time. Please fix this ASAP AOL!!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I also have this issue. I have an iphone client that stays logged in, so not only do I get the messages in both places (which is fine), I also get the systemMSGs.
Give me a "or press 2 if you never want to get one of these annoying, time-wasting notifications again."
I’m annoyed at the wasted time
-
Inappropriate?I get this because I am logged into AIM through the gmail chat interface, as well as via Adium (all at the same computer).
I agree, let us block the damn thing.
I’m annoyed that this hasn't been resolved yet.
-
If you're using Adium on MacOS, try the Challenge/Response plugin:
http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a...
It seems to be working for me. Note that Adium will ask you to confirm it. After installation, go to the menu Adium->Challege/Reponse to enable and configure it. For it to work, AolsystemMsg should not be a buddy in your contact list. -
Thank you very much for referring me to this resource, avogadro23. I will try it out and see how it works because I just can't block the damned thing. -
Inappropriate? Please kill this message. iPhone + macbook + AIM = frustrations.
I know, I know, I know!!! STOP TELLING ME. I get push notifications on my phone whenever i log into AIM on my laptop, and I have to launch the app to dismiss them.
Considering moving over 100% to facebook chat and google chat which are supported on both Adium and Beejive and do NOT waste my time with these stupid stupid stupid messages.
at LEAST let your more tech savey users disable the messages.
this is my dream:
* Your screen name (screenname) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1. reply with 2 to disable these messages for your account. Click here for more information.
2
*are you sure? this is a security feature that blah blah blah...
yes
* notifications have been disabled for your account. to reactivate them at any time please send "1" to aolsystemmsg. thanks
I’m furious and ready to quit AIM because this has been an issue for over a year with NO FIX.
-
I agree, there should be a way to keep this from messaging me other than the Adium fix listed above. -
Inappropriate? If AOL wants to keep this for security reasons, perhaps a compromise would be "reply with 2 to disable these messages when the come from my MAC address". I.E. "Yes, I know I'm logged in from my iPhone and my desktop and google, but please tell me if someone logs in from somewhere else."
If that's too tough, I like Andrew's solution
I’m waiting for AOL to catch on to how their customers use their system.
-
Inappropriate?I always get this message after changing from WIFI locations. And the Click here for more info, doesn't work as well. Very very annoying...
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Reasonable idea - poorly implemented. There's no reason that this message should not be blockable or user configurable. No other IM client has this excessively annoying feature. I dont need more excuses to leave this IM system.
-
It almost feels like AOL is TRYING to reduce it's market share... -
Inappropriate? This is a good idea gone wrong. The place where AOL went wrong is where they do not let the user disable the message.
LISTEN TO ME AOL, YOUR NOT LETTING US DISABLE THE MESSAGE IS ANNOYING!
Sorry for all caps, but I'm trying to prove a point. For the causal user that doesn't use two computers, it's important for him to know if somebody else is on his name. For the crazy user that has three computers, GMail and an iPhone, seeing this message thirty times a day is no fun.
I say, if I block the user, keep him blocked. Alternatively, have a 'Disable' link that rides along with the message that, when clicked, takes me to a secure AOL site which allows me to disable the message after typing in my password.
I’m pissed off
-
Inappropriate?I use aim all over the place. at work. at home. on my phone. so i know that i am going to get this message. its just annoying. i know it has its place. just not in my face. could we try something like "you are logged into a new location. do you want to add this new location to you trusted location? yes or no" give me the option to approve what devices, based on IP address or MAC address, I use regularly. So now I would only get this pop up when I login in to a computer for just a second. If I log on from a computer on my trusted device list then all is good and I don't get this warning. Its not killing me. But it's just so damn annoying having to delete the message everytime I log on. Twice actually. One on my mac and one on my phone. PLEASE FIX!!!
I’m annoyed to no end.
-
Inappropriate?I agree completely. If i BLOCK a user, i expect it to be B L O C K E D. I do not want this stupid message coming back ever, if i press block. This is annoying as hell. I know it was created in good intentions, but the inability to turn it off if a crappy idea.
I’m annoyed every time i use aim.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem e.g. when logged in via iChat from a Mac and on IM+ on the iPhone which is a totally legit situation.
AOL should really offer a way to turn these messages off, they are annoying like the pest.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Ok this has become nothing but a b**chfest now, with everyone posting their own "me too". It's obvious there isn't going to be a solution, and it's up to AOL if we want any satisfaction.
So what's it going to be, AOL? I haven't heard any representatives respond in a long time. Not even a "we'll put it on the todo list".
I’m still upset
-
Inappropriate?I'm so annoyed by this I've resorted to writing an AppleScript, and setting iChat's Alert preferences to run it every time it recieves a Chat Invitation:
using terms from application "iChat"
on received text invitation theText from theBuddy for theChat
if name of theBuddy as string = "AOLSystemMsg" then decline theChat
end received text invitation
end using terms from
Only messages from AOLSystemMsg are blocked by this. This solves it for me (running iChat under Snow Leopard). Hallelujah!
I’m annoyed at AOL for not allowing this to be turned off
