Apple should allow for app's to run in the background on the iPhone.
Although the push notifications introduced with firmware 3.0 is great, certain app's would benefit from being able to run in the background. App's like TomTom (so you can still hear navigation instruction while on a call), Last.fm/Spotify (so you can listen to music while doing other stuff on the iPhone) and Skype (maybe a daemon that waits for incoming calls?) would all benefit from background support.
Maybe you could have a system in a future firmware update where you can run any app in the background, but you can only run say 3 apps at a time. Maybe you could have a glow around the icon of a running app to tell the user it is running?

Inappropriate?im sure this has been requested somewhere else here on GS but it doesn't hurt to say it again. one great idea would have been to allow the user to select only one app that could run in the background at a time.

Yeah I had a quick search for 'background app' topic on here, but was quite surprised not to find one.
I think the main issue with this for Apple is the impact on battery life. Apple needs to invest in some kind of new battery tech, or make the iPhone much more energy efficient. -
nathan - they've made that explicit and clear in previous announcement in that the issue is clearly related to battery life. honestly even my iphone 3gs in its current state has a relatively short battery life so i can't imagine it being shorter. would be a pain.
that said, there must be a way around this and i think that it will come in time either through power management features or longer life batteries. -
Inappropriate? After using the new Spotify app that has just been released (https://www.spotify.com/blog/archives...), this is a feature that it needed more than ever.
Look's like i'm going to have jailbreak again and use Backgrounder for the time being.
I’m jailbreaking my iPhone... again.
