Apple should change from AIM to Jabber (XMPP) for their MobileMe instant messaging service.

It would be a really good idea for Apple to switch from using the AIM (OSCAR) protocol for it's MobileMe instant messaging service to the open standard Jabber (XMPP) protocol.

By switching to Jabber, Apple would be following in the footsteps of Google Talk in supporting a open standard which enables anyone, on any network to chat to each other using a single account.

At the moment, if you have a MobileMe account and want to chat with someone on MSN, you would have to sign-up to a MSN account. If both MobileMe and MSN used a single, open protocol (Jabber), a MobileMe user would be able to simply add the person on MSN to their IM client of choice using just their email address (joebloggs@hotmail.com) and would be able to chat with them with no further setup required. It just works.

Imagine if all IM providers switched to Jabber, we would have a big open network where anyone could communicate with anyone, no matter what service they use. Your buddy list could be made up of users of Yahoo, AIM, MSN or practically any IM network. Also, because Jabber is a open protocol, anyone could roll their own system and setup their own IM network on their own server. So if you had your own website, and a email address at that website, by installing Jabber on your server, you could use your own email address as your IM name.

So if Apple switched, you would straight away be able to add Google Talk users to your buddy list, and hopefully, Apple will be seen as a example, and as other companies follow their lead you will be able to add MSN users, Yahoo users etc, the list goes on.

Now imagine if Apple does this, then releases iChat for the iPhone. With one big IM network accessible on your phone, it could easily replace SMS, saving you money.
