Are there alternatives to Flip4Mac's WMV plug-in for Quicktime?
Every time I try to open a WMV movie that is more than 60MB I get the Flip4Mac "converting" dialog before it opens in QuickTime. Usually it doesn't take long but if the file is larger than 80MB it can take a long while. I only have the standard free version of Flip4Mac.
Does anybody know of any other free Windows Media plug-ins for QuickTime that will allow me to open movies and audio faster??

Inappropriate?Thanks Jay,
I am actually looking for another alternative that is a WMV "specialized" plug-in. I have used Perian for the longest time but it is only good for WMA version 1 and 2, it doesn't do video, at least nothing with the latest Windows codecs. That's why you need Flip4Mac... which is what I am trying to get rid of.

Inappropriate?Ah, I see now. My bad.

Inappropriate?flip is the only plug in i have found for quicktime. Unfortunately, microsoft has dropped all support for quicktime player and apple refers all users to this plug-in as well. To be honest, I just use VLC.

Inappropriate?Dave and Alex,
I use VLC too as I found the problems with flip were mounting and just a headache. Now I have no problems.

Inappropriate?Thank you for your reply, I do use VLC. However due to my line of work I use Quicktime Pro the most. Currently I have 4 media players installed to handle what Quicktime lacks (Real, VLC, Mplayer, Stream-clip).
VLC and M-player will handle all windows specific codecs and formats. Real handles the odd ones and Stream-clip does specifically MPEG...
However I recently bought Apple's MPEG-2 add-on so "Stream-clip" is not needed and I hardly ever use Real nowadays. so my only concern was to find a GOOD plugging that could replace Flip4Mac since it is probably the weakest link (hence why I have to use VLC and M-Player).
If their free plugging was "great" I would buy their $180 "WMV Studio PRO" plugging... However, their free offering lacks so many things and it's so slow, it is not even worth spending $49(the WMV studio version) for a possible "better" version... plus all they do is allow the users to encode and decode. so that means that playback and export into Quicktime is still the same as their free version (which sucks) -
Inappropriate?WMV is a popular video format while it's not compatible with Mac system. If you just need to play it in QuickTime, you can download Flip4Mac for free and it enables you to play WMV videos. But if you want to convert it to QuickTime or to upload it to iTunes for playback on your iPod, iPhone or other portable players, you need this professional easy-to-use WMV Video Converter for Mac.
Below is the step by step tutorial about how to convert WMV for QuickTime on Mac.
