Battery Percentage on iPhone 3G

I currently own a iPhone 3G, 8GB black. When the iPhone 3GS annoucned, not only was I a little upset that the new iPhone could record video (which i understand is because of a much improved camera CMOS chip) but I still don't understand why one little feature has been left out for everyone but 3GS upgraders:

Battery Percentage.

Why is this not available in OS 3.0 for iPhone and iPhone 3G users? I know the battery tells the phone how much juice it has left (hence the 20% and 10% warnings) and i know all this is is a simple piece of code, possibly left out by accident.

I want to see battery percentage available for ALL iPhone models, not just the 3GS.

Because of this, i'm seriously considering Android for my next mobile device platform.

Why does Apple continue to shaft it's customers?
