BRICKED! iPhone 2.0 software bricked my phone, and now I can't even restore it!
I tried to update to 2.0 on my Edge iPhone, but it freaked out at the end of the update and threw up an error. So now the iPhone is bricked. Fine.
Then it told me I needed to restore the iPhone from a backup, by first restoring the software. So, fine. Except that it won't let me! The error message is superlame: "The iPhone 'iPhone' cannot be restored." Superbricked!
I tried switching to my other Mac to restore the iPhone from the 1.1.4 software, instead of 2.0, but no luck there.
Is there anything I can do, besides just taking it in to the Genius Bar for a replacement? Also, why does Apple hate me?

Hey Everyone with the error, I found this on the Apple forums from Lappygirl, worked for me ...
"I just got off of the phone with iPhone tech support. (had to use my landline!)
After a 20 minute wait, I got to talk to Ashley. She said there are 1100 people on hold and everyone she talked to so far is having the same "accessing iTunes" problem.
She said DO NOT disconnect your phone. Intead, when you get the message saying it timed out, click ok. Then click on any other heading, Music for example, in your itunes. Then go back and click on your iPhone icon.
Keep doing this repeatedly to keep your place in line.
I did this for the past 10 minutes STRAIGHT through and I am now done!!! Honest to god! I dont know how to do screen shots or whatever, but I'm done."

I was having the same problem and found something that worked. Did a shift-click on the "Restore" button and browsed to the firmware 2.0 file that I had originally downloaded. That will force a restore from this file instead of the 1.1.4 one it defaults to otherwise. Hope it works for you too!

we can make appointments @ the apple store together! -
uninstall itunes 7.7 and install itunes 7.5 then once you have done that download 1.1.4 firmware for your iphone.
put your iphone in DFU mode by doing that follow these stepsThis is how to achieve DFU mode. You can do it on every phone:
* Attach the phone to the pc
* Turn the phone off
* Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
* Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
* At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
then go back to itunes n hold SHIFT n click restore and open the 1.1.4 restore firmware
and it will be fixed in the end
but unfortunately be 1.1.4 firmware not 2.0 :( -
Inappropriate?Same problem here, except that I was eventually able to restore back to the old software (version 1.1.4) on a Windows PC. I don't think I'll be trying any of this malarkey again, though.
I’m confused
-
what did you do to get it back to 1.1.4? -
I just started up iTunes. It told me the phone needed to be restored to factory settings, and then it did it for me (took a while). This didn't happen first time, for some reason, so if you've already tried it then maybe try it again. -
Inappropriate?Me too Doh I'm trying madly to restore but can't HELP
-
Inappropriate?I phone 2.0 wont allow my device to go into Recovery mode while Trying to backpedal to go back to 1.1.4, What the point of keeping devices lock now 72 countries now have 3G iPhone?
I’m fustrated
-
Inappropriate?Nothing seems to work it appears that you can't easily downgrade will have to wait for hackers to release update
bugger -
Inappropriate?Don't chuck out that AT&T sim card just yet, managed to get it into recovery mode, won't down grade just yet but that could be apple and itunes 7.7 one step ahead of me, VMware & Wista with and older version of Itunes (from http://oldapps.com) 7.6.1 and ISPW (requires XP SP2) trying to restore with 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 to see If I can back pedal! will let you know how I get on!
I’m crossing fingers
-
thanks mossy, hope it works. Let me know, and I'll go down that path if successful. -
Inappropriate?yikes, they may have rewritten the "recovery mode" firmware as It is no longer recognizable with previous version of I tunes, only 7.7 recognizes the phone in recovery mode, upgrading virtual machine itunes version to see I can get it to accept the an older firmware version (ispw) file
I’m no counting my chickens

I believe that should be option-click for Macs, shift-click for Windows -
sckyt, you are my hero!! it's working. thanks so much. -
where is the firmware 2.O located? I can't seem to find any of my itunes downloads -
Inappropriate?Make sure you read the entry AND comments here carefully. They talk about this and how it's big and scary but isn't what you think it is.
One more thing: after the install, you will need to restart iTunes and then reconnect the iPhone. Otherwise, you get a really scary error message and think you bricked your phone.
Now, if you had a jailbroken iphone, you may need to do something slightly different. After I upgraded the firmware, it allowed me to restore my data from my backup. But if you had a backup from a jailbroken phone, that may not work. So, after the upgrade, disconnect and restart, you may need to reset to factory defaults, reconfigure your sync prefs in iTunes (if needed, it probably isn't) and THEN sync.
I’m happy with 2.0!

Inappropriate? My iphone is now rendered useless. After running iphone 2.0 update I cannot get past Incorrect SIM for Activation yet my Optus au sim was working fine under 1.1.4 Optus are a carrier now. But I cannot restore to 1.1.4 I get the same error (20). I cannot find a method to downgrade it's something about baseband upgrade incompatible. HELP?
-
Inappropriate?Going to try restore to lower Firmware versions
-
Inappropriate?Well ... my iphone is now bricked too. It went through the whole backup, download and restore successfully, but then it bricked when it was trying to connect to iTunes Store to activate the phone again. SEe the picture. And I cannot downgrade, I cannot restore, I cannot do a f...g thing. Anybody has seen this problem?
I’m sad and pissed of.
-
Thats the exact problem I am having, non-hacked iphone here as well :( -
Oh man. Me too. 1st Gen 4GB non-hacked phone. But now the message has changed "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection was reset." WTF? -
same fffffffffffffing thing im two seconds away of slamming both my mac book pro and iphone lol i think its the whole everyone trying to install it and all the servers are packed so im just clicking back and fourth eventually it should work right? or atleast i hope so... i dont want to get stuck without a phone this whole day especially on a FRIDAY! aaah! -
I have the same problem - and my phone was also unhacked - I'm wondering if the load of new users is the problem - what a pain in the ass -
I have the same issue. I didn't get a warning or anything and it appeared to upgrade properly. But the results are similar to yours. -
Me too -- same problem and my phone is NOT hacked. I got (almost) the exact same error message. I'm hoping it's just server traffic or something but that is just a guess on my part. I am not an expert by any means. Be strong, iBrothers and iSisters! -
Inappropriate? All that I get on my iphone screen after the upgrade is a picture of a USB cord and the Itunes logo
-
hey guys, so... i tried it all i think!! downgraded itunes, downgraded firmware, cracked firmware, followed the instructions posted on http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index...
but no go.. the best i can get is the at&t activation screen. I just wanna go back to 1.1.4 until the dev team to work their magic! and release it...
i have a 2g which was unlocked/jailbroken -
Inappropriate?I just wanted to know who's phone is hacked and who's is not. if it is just the hacked ones, well then there is no one to blame but the folks that hacked their phones, if its on unhacked phones then everyone has a gripe with crapple today.
-
non hacked phone rendered useless by "upgrade" to 2.0 firmware. -
Inappropriate?Nonhacked iphone.
-
Inappropriate?I have a non-jailbroke iphone. I did the 2.0 software update this morning (Fri, July 11) through iTunes. I have the same problems. All I see is the itunes logo and the usb cord. When I plug it into iTunes, iTunes says "We Could Not Complete Your iTunes Store Request..." I'm screwed. I've always done things above board with my iPhone, never hacked, always updated it. I even sing to it. I'm sad. Just wanted to share.
-
lol same thing we are all stuck on the same boat!! while the ppl new to iphone 3 g are enjoying the 1 gen are suffering this is just great! im having the same problem! damn iphone im so mad -
Yeah, im suffering through the same with non-hacked iphone here. -
Inappropriate?Non-hacked
-
Inappropriate? My phone isn't hacked either, and it's bricked just the same. I'm calling AT&T to cancel, so I can actually have a PHONE that makes calls.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Another non-hacked here with the same issues as hello62
-
Inappropriate?I get the same error. I have a perfectly vanilla situation, no hacks - I am a total "follow the directions" safety user. Restarted my macbook pro, still get the same result. Error message says the problem is with itunes store, try again later.
Could this be a problem on the apple server end, to many requests to fulfill at once, and not a software problem on the phone? -
I've read a few posts and that seems to be the thinking. It's quite possibly a server problem. -
i agree its the server problem with all the money they have they should fix that issue! -
Inappropriate?folks at apple are claiming that its server related. so there is no word yet on weather its geared towards hacked phones.

Inappropriate?Same here, itunes couldn't complete my store request. It says to makesure my ssl3 tsl1 are on... well they are and it still won't connect.... i hate my life
-
Inappropriate?Non-hacked 1st gen phone here. Same exact problem at hello62. I am bummed because this is my ONLY phone.
I’m bumming out
-
Inappropriate?yep, it was just a problem with the server! I just clicked back and forth from downloads to the iPhone and it finally connected. Everything is cool now. Just be patient, and go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth....
-
Inappropriate?Thought I was gonna cry. Here's the link again: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.j...
I now have fancy new apps on my phone. -
Inappropriate?I'm glad it worked out for you hello62. :)
Us with the unknown error (20) and unknown error (1604) are still out of luck. :( -
Unfortunately I also get the 1604 error after trying to upgrade to 2.0. I havent seen anybody else with the same problem though. (2.0 + 1604). Where did you read people having that problem? Just asking so I can maybe see when they figure it out somehow. Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Hey guys - I had the same problem - HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HACKED OR NON HACKED... Apple Servers are backed up and you just gotta keep trying by reconnecting your iphone back to the computer - eventually youll get through - took me an hour!!!
Cheers! -
Inappropriate?@scott it is just a server error. EVERYONE want's this right now... so it's going to take a while. those error messages are just catch all errors. it's gonna work just do what danielwebb4 said!
Good luck -
Inappropriate? It drives me nuts that Apple couldnt foresee this coming, they know how many phones they have sold, they should know what kind of volume the servers need to be able to handle.........thats all I am saying
I’m repetitive
-
Inappropriate?@wing
I think you are confused. It isn't trying to connect to the server. It fails before even installing the 2.0 firmware. It craps out at "preparing to update iphone" when it tries to reboot the phone before starting the installation. I don't get to the activation step.
The problem hello62 ran into is separate from what is affecting some of us in this thread. -
Inappropriate?non-hacked iphone here too. I tried danielwebb4's suggestion and it somehow worked ... after ten minutes of clicking in iTunes, it is now "Accessing the iTunes store" ... but it's been doing it for 5 minutes already ... so we'll see....
-
Inappropriate?@ scott
my bad, i misunderstood. -
Inappropriate?i have just spoken to apple tech serport and he says the phone has to authenticated by apple and that because every body is trying to do it as the same time the system is not handling it, he told me you just have to wait it out!
-
Inappropriate? No confusion here. I am waiting on the server, my phone updated fine. Sorry to hear your having errors. Like I said, I dont understand why Apple didnt plan better for this.
-
Inappropriate?I'm on the -9838 error train too. I'm tired of clicking back and forth so I'm venting :)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?yep, the click on and off the iphone item worked (hit OK to the error message every time, once you don't get the error message from iTunes store, you're all good!). only took about 10 cycles as of 11:10 am eastern
-
Inappropriate?I've been at it for just over 45 minutes now, still no luck!
-
Inappropriate?I have a non-hacked phone. The update completed and upon reboot I now have this little gem:
-
Exact same issue, but I found a way to fix it.... I just kept connecting and for some reason it worked somewhere between the 10th and 20th try. Didn't do anything different. MAybe restarted my comp and iPhone somewhere along the process. -
Inappropriate? That little Gem means you still have at least another 45 minutes of clicking back and forth to go before the iTunes store authenticates your download. Enjoy!
-
Inappropriate? You would think that Apple would have planned for the additional server load today. This seems like something that Microsoft would do. L for love!
-
Inappropriate?ok, that was weird, so I get a pcture of the Iphone in my devices window and then a picture of a broken chain on the side of it. Anyone know what that was all about?
-
Inappropriate?two and a half hours but i finally got in line.
-
Inappropriate?One hour and still counting.....
-
Inappropriate?Incidentally, re-jailbreaking my phone unbricked it but it doesn't seem to be getting a signal. I basically have an iPod touch now. Thanks, Apple.
-
Inappropriate?Woohoo, just over an hour, I am back in the game baby! Dont give up people, it will happen!
-
LUCKY YOU!... still stuck with the 'Network Connection was reset' error :( -
yeah lucky lol im still stuck..... :( -
Inappropriate?2.0 finally!
-
Inappropriate?Okay, this is cute. I've managed to get the phone working again. But I still have the old firmware. And now iTunes doesn't even want to let me access the phone to sync it so I can get my contacts back. Ugh, I wiped it this morning hoping to trade this thing in since I just bought it a month ago. I forsee this whole process being a miserable ordeal.
-
Inappropriate?
HELP please!!!... been trying for over 2 hours now! -
Inappropriate?i've been working on it for 3 hours now. am i doing this right? I get the error, click on OK, click on music, click back on iphone, rinse, lather, repeat....
-
lol yes thats what u are supposed to do but jeez i have been with this all day! -
Inappropriate? That's what I have been doing... exactly the same thing... still no luck :(
-
All of you who are going between music and clicking on iphone icon look at your iphone and in the upper left hand corner mine says no service is that true with yours?? -
Inappropriate?i dont understand this!!! im so frustrated with this... im two minutes away of just purchasing the new one and dumping this one in the trash!
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?purchasing the new one won't make things any better - I have a friend who bought one, and they can't get it do anything either! tech support has told them that the iTunes servers are basically overloaded (and even with new phones 'activated' in store, it turns out that there's an extra activation step via iTunes). So in other words, if you buy a new one you'll maybe still have no usable phone today until their server calm down.
I’m wondering how Apple got it all so wrong
-
hey thanks for the reply lol im going to TRY calming down maybe some air will help im just going to leave the phone and talk a walk lol -
Inappropriate?Ok...do you constantly click back and forth or do you wait for the box to click ok and then click ok and then go to music and then to iphone and wait for the box again and repeat?

thats what i have been doing and nothing... -
Inappropriate?FINALLY!!!
Thanks for the tip.
It's true, you just have to be patient. -
Inappropriate?lucky... lol im still stuck i dont know if its my internet or something but i think its not helping i have dsl and its wireless sometimes i lose connection so i am assuming that if it keeps losing connect and it says atat error on a webpage it will dif. take me a long time.. i dont see it happening soon
I’m depresses
-
Inappropriate?Been trying since 9:52, have to go to work now so I guess i will mess with it when I get home.
I knew I should not have updated till at least a few days, always been my rule with Apple and now its bit me in the butt
I’m sad and frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have a jail-broken iPhone. I installed the 2.0 software and then it had to restore my iPhone; but when it tried, it said it cannot cause of an unknown error 20. Whenever I keep trying to restore my iPhone; it leads me to the same error.
What do I do?
I’m sad
-
I am having the same issue I cant seem to downgrade either. So sad. -
It works now! It finally was able to restore; and I now have a working iPhone. Only thing is that if keep it connected to iTunes; then it will keep restoring over and over again. -
Inappropriate?well im also clicking on purchased or anything else and then go back to iphone and see that it tries to reconnect to the server so i think it really doesnt matter either where u click... bu yea has been unsuccessful for the past 2 hours im going to give up borrow a cell and go out and deal with it like in two days lol
I’m unconcerned
-
Inappropriate?OMG OMG OMG lol it like knew i was mad or something its WORKING!!!!!! YES
I’m IM SO FREAKING HAPPY! 2 hours later lol
-
Inappropriate?I have been getting the same error message all morning now it's just hung up trying to get connected for about 15 minutes. See below. Does this mean I'm getting closer?
-
Inappropriate?pray because i had the issue for a long time i just kept clicking back and fourth on the purchased and then iphone did that for like an hour to almost two and finally now its just restoring the music files but its done
-
Inappropriate? They are now reporting this on yahoo home page
-
Inappropriate? The solution is to just keep trying over and over again. Keep your phone in the dock - once you get the error message clickon something else in iTunes like music and then click on your phone again. Just keep trying it and eventually it will work. It took me about 6 times.
then do a sync and you'll be magically delicious.
1 person says

-
Does this really work? -
Inappropriate?no its been there for a while lol but i am surprised that if you do search it theres like millions of threads post and everything
-
Inappropriate?I think, think that it is finally working!
-
Inappropriate?says that it is restoring music and videos...........slowly.
-
Inappropriate?yea it did that for me but what i now notice is that it lets me use the cellphone after that long restoring music and videos very slowly but then it doesnt show that screen of restoring iphone or anything it gives me the problem of accessing itunes store.. though im glad mine works and i can call ppl now it still gives me that same issue
I’m ugh! whatever
-
Inappropriate?it's true it works. its like little nemo, just keep clicking, just keep clicking!
-
Inappropriate?Jade, each time that someone calls me, it sort of interrupts the back up, then asks if I am sure that I want to stop the back up process, so I then click continue with back up. We'll get there, slowly but surely!
-
Inappropriate?yea i received a bunch of text messages but it kept downloading... it works fine i can make calls but what i am referring to is that you know when u connect the cell phone to the computer and itunes pops out and it tells u "name's iphone?" ok when u click on it, it should show a picture of ur iphone and like how many things u have stored and basically the whole syncing part... i guess it'll get fixed later, not worried too much about it, but i say if we have done everything it should fix that issue, it keeps saying that the store cant connect try later but my iphone works on the homescreen it shows the app store and contacts and the calculator changes when u tilt the phone and so on but whatever ill let time pass lol thanks. :D
I’m hopeful lol
-
Inappropriate?I am having the same problem with the same error 20 any one know what I can do to fix it?
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate? It's been over 4 hours now.. still no luck... i should have stuck with my blackberry and not waited in line for 4 hours to get the 3G!.... Still keep getting the error - We could not complete your iTunes store request . The network connection was reset.
I’m very very very FRUSTRATED!
-
Inappropriate?Apple.... what gives?
I'm getting the same dialog box as Sandy
connection was reset.
I’m without my iphone
-
Inappropriate?I've clicking since 9am. Still thick as a brick. I got nuthin.
I’m losing the will to live.
-
Inappropriate?Well it seem as if Apple has not prepared themselves for such a large launch. Perhaps they forgot to beef up their itunes servers to accommodate the activation of all of the new phones from each of the 72 countries they're now in.
Don't worry Apple, I would have overlooked such a small piece of the puzzle myslef.
And to all those suffering out there from the iPhone woes, be it first gen (like myself) or 3g. take comfort in the fact that in a day or two, the server traffic will die down, and we will all get our turn to fix our phones. patience is a virtue. Remember, that not even ten years ago, many of us got by just fine without a cell phone...
So take a deep breath... We will all be OK!
I’m ready to get drunk
-
Inappropriate?I FINALLY GOT ITUNES TO DO THE UPGRADE. I just kept retrying.. anyway, now it installs then syncs everything EXCEPT MUSIC & PODCASTS & VIDEOS!!! i restarted itunes, the iPhone, and do new install & restore. I had tried downgrading & redoing restores- so i think i might have done something that required the restart & re-restore again.
-
Inappropriate?wow this must suck or u guys but dont worry wat for a day or two cause there are 6 million ppl with iphones and mmore than a mill wtih iphone 3g AND ALLL OF THEM ARE PLUGING in their iphones to the computer thats y its not working and ontop of that all the ipod touch users n the world are hooking up their ipod touches to get th newfirmware so justr wait little while and itll work....btw i got 2.0 and IT FING ROCKKSSS WOHHOO tap tap revenge is the best:)
I’m loving 2.0
-
Inappropriate? If you have an original iPhone in a country unsupported by Apple (had to unlock to recognise sim), and upgraded to 2.0, you need to downgrade back your brick back to 1.1.4. Instructions are here http://sleepers.net/news/?page_id=216
Problematic and quite technical on a Mac, I found.
Bottom line is that you need to surgically remove (most) bits of iTunes 7.7 and DFU restore using old version of iTunes (7.5 is good). That leaves you with 1.1.4 iPhone which is unusable for any modem - calls, sms, wifi - so you have to then downgrade the baseband.
This may take several attempts and at least two hours.
So from an original iPhone owner in Australia's point of view:
DO NOT UPGRADE TO 2.0 YET. It ain't worth it until, if ever, the telcos recognise the original iPhone.
I'm sick of routing around "hacking" this thing to work.
I’m waiting for Aussie telcos to recognise my original iPhone without unlocking
-
Inappropriate?Hello ,
here is the solution for it , well if it is giving you the error 20 then it is becaus
e of the itunes 7.5 and you are running iphone 2.0 the easiest thing is to make your iphone work is this that install itunes 7.7 and if your are struck in recovery mode then restore your iphone 2.0 firmware and remmber to remove itunes completly from your system and reinstall it clean when your iphone 2.0 is installed put the 02 pay as you go sim card when it will be restored the itunes will say to activate it click on continue and enter your apple id if you have or make one and then click on continue and den agree the terms and conditions and den click continue DATS iT!!!!!!!!!!! your iphone will say iPhone is Activated but remember there will be no installer in it anyways the new Appstore App is really cool and i think there must be a way to hack the iphone 2.0 to unlock after doing this like in older firmwares....,
ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m Confident
-
Inappropriate?Hi W86k, does this apply to a jailbroken phone as well, my phone is completely dead i don't even get the connect itunes image.
When i connect my phone i get the message "the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.
I wish i knew what that meant but i think it is because i am trying to connect my upgraded phone to itunes 7.5?
Can any body help? -
Answer to your question you need to delete the 7.7 version of the itunes library under you /usr/you/library/itunes, don't forget to rename your itunes folder under the music folder. I have Jail broken iphone (original) too, and I have yet to successfully downgrade to a firmware version lower than 2.0. I even tried using both versions of version 2.0 ispw files , I you cant even restore using 7.7 again remember this is a difference between Restore mode and DFU mode, I believe the combination of correct firmware boot loader portion of firmware which is black screen state of the device would be the less progmatic recovery mode, I have no problem fully restoring the device back to version 2.0 but cannot activate it as I am not and AT&T customer. Hence I just might have to wait a few more days till the guys at iphone-dev.org to release their Version 2.0 PwnageTool hope this helps, but I think apple have really done a number on behalf of AT&T as part of their original deal with profit sharing etc! (this is a guess) to get people to register more original hand sets on the AT&T network, dispite known how important the jail broken devices a led to the success of apple breaking the mobile device market. Props to iPhone Dev Team! Wooot! -
Inappropriate?Well, I had to bring mine into the apple store today, and they replaced it free of charge, even a couple weeks outside of warranty.
Good job Apple!
I’m satisfied
-
Dude. No way. Awesome. -
Inappropriate?hi Sheim,
the thing is that you are getting that itunes error because you havent removed itunes completly first you have to go to ur usic folder if you are using mac and rename the folder name or move it to trash and if you are using windows then go to my music folder in my documents and do the same thing rename or delete the folder and then do the process which i told before
gudluck lol

Inappropriate?i'm having the same problems but with an iPod touch. every time i try to restore it, it says error 1604. it won't ever show up in iTunes. when i unplugged it and tried to turn it on all i got was a connect to iTunes picture. what should i do?
I’m sad
-
Take it into the apple store if you have one near, a couple hours out of your time but otherwise, free. No stress needed. -
Inappropriate?sorry to hear about your bricked iphone. i will gladly take it off your hands for £30 as i need the spares. message me on my email jay_mckee@hotmail.co.uk as i am not a member if you wish to consider this.
