BRICKED! iPhone 2.0 software bricked my phone, and now I can't even restore it!
I tried to update to 2.0 on my Edge iPhone, but it freaked out at the end of the update and threw up an error. So now the iPhone is bricked. Fine.
Then it told me I needed to restore the iPhone from a backup, by first restoring the software. So, fine. Except that it won't let me! The error message is superlame: "The iPhone 'iPhone' cannot be restored." Superbricked!
I tried switching to my other Mac to restore the iPhone from the 1.1.4 software, instead of 2.0, but no luck there.
Is there anything I can do, besides just taking it in to the Genius Bar for a replacement? Also, why does Apple hate me?

Hey Everyone with the error, I found this on the Apple forums from Lappygirl, worked for me ...
"I just got off of the phone with iPhone tech support. (had to use my landline!)
After a 20 minute wait, I got to talk to Ashley. She said there are 1100 people on hold and everyone she talked to so far is having the same "accessing iTunes" problem.
She said DO NOT disconnect your phone. Intead, when you get the message saying it timed out, click ok. Then click on any other heading, Music for example, in your itunes. Then go back and click on your iPhone icon.
Keep doing this repeatedly to keep your place in line.
I did this for the past 10 minutes STRAIGHT through and I am now done!!! Honest to god! I dont know how to do screen shots or whatever, but I'm done."

I was having the same problem and found something that worked. Did a shift-click on the "Restore" button and browsed to the firmware 2.0 file that I had originally downloaded. That will force a restore from this file instead of the 1.1.4 one it defaults to otherwise. Hope it works for you too!

uninstall itunes 7.7 and install itunes 7.5 then once you have done that download 1.1.4 firmware for your iphone.
put your iphone in DFU mode by doing that follow these stepsThis is how to achieve DFU mode. You can do it on every phone:
* Attach the phone to the pc
* Turn the phone off
* Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
* Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
* At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
then go back to itunes n hold SHIFT n click restore and open the 1.1.4 restore firmware
and it will be fixed in the end
but unfortunately be 1.1.4 firmware not 2.0 :( -

I just started up iTunes. It told me the phone needed to be restored to factory settings, and then it did it for me (took a while). This didn't happen first time, for some reason, so if you've already tried it then maybe try it again.

Inappropriate?Don't chuck out that AT&T sim card just yet, managed to get it into recovery mode, won't down grade just yet but that could be apple and itunes 7.7 one step ahead of me, VMware & Wista with and older version of Itunes (from http://oldapps.com) 7.6.1 and ISPW (requires XP SP2) trying to restore with 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 to see If I can back pedal! will let you know how I get on!

Inappropriate?yikes, they may have rewritten the "recovery mode" firmware as It is no longer recognizable with previous version of I tunes, only 7.7 recognizes the phone in recovery mode, upgrading virtual machine itunes version to see I can get it to accept the an older firmware version (ispw) file

Inappropriate?Make sure you read the entry AND comments here carefully. They talk about this and how it's big and scary but isn't what you think it is.
One more thing: after the install, you will need to restart iTunes and then reconnect the iPhone. Otherwise, you get a really scary error message and think you bricked your phone.
Now, if you had a jailbroken iphone, you may need to do something slightly different. After I upgraded the firmware, it allowed me to restore my data from my backup. But if you had a backup from a jailbroken phone, that may not work. So, after the upgrade, disconnect and restart, you may need to reset to factory defaults, reconfigure your sync prefs in iTunes (if needed, it probably isn't) and THEN sync.

After running iphone 2.0 update I cannot get past Incorrect SIM for Activation yet my Optus au sim was working fine under 1.1.4 Optus are a carrier now. But I cannot restore to 1.1.4 I get the same error (20). I cannot find a method to downgrade it's something about baseband upgrade incompatible. HELP?

It went through the whole backup, download and restore successfully, but then it bricked when it was trying to connect to iTunes Store to activate the phone again. SEe the picture. Me too -- same problem and my phone is NOT hacked. I got (almost) the exact same error message. I'm hoping it's just server traffic or something but that is just a guess on my part. I am not an expert by any means. Be strong, iBrothers and iSisters!

Inappropriate?I have a non-jailbroke iphone. I did the 2.0 software update this morning (Fri, July 11) through iTunes. I have the same problems. All I see is the itunes logo and the usb cord. When I plug it into iTunes, iTunes says "We Could Not Complete Your iTunes Store Request..." I'm screwed. I've always done things above board with my iPhone, never hacked, always updated it. Unfortunately I also get the 1604 error after trying to upgrade to 2.0. I havent seen anybody else with the same problem though. (2.0 + 1604). Where did you read people having that problem? Just asking so I can maybe see when they figure it out somehow. Thanks.

Inappropriate?Hey guys - I had the same problem - HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HACKED OR NON HACKED... Apple Servers are backed up and you just gotta keep trying by reconnecting your iphone back to the computer - eventually youll get through - took me an hour!!!

I think you are confused. It isn't trying to connect to the server. It fails before even installing the 2.0 firmware. It craps out at "preparing to update iphone" when it tries to reboot the phone before starting the installation. I don't get to the activation step.

Exact same issue, but I found a way to fix it.... I just kept connecting and for some reason it worked somewhere between the 10th and 20th try. Didn't do anything different. MAybe restarted my comp and iPhone somewhere along the process.

Inappropriate?purchasing the new one won't make things any better - I have a friend who bought one, and they can't get it do anything either! tech support has told them that the iTunes servers are basically overloaded (and even with new phones 'activated' in store, it turns out that there's an extra activation step via iTunes). So in other words, if you buy a new one you'll maybe still have no usable phone today until their server calm down.

It works now! It finally was able to restore; and I now have a working iPhone. Only thing is that if keep it connected to iTunes; then it will keep restoring over and over again.

Inappropriate?The solution is to just keep trying over and over again. Keep your phone in the dock - once you get the error message clickon something else in iTunes like music and then click on your phone again. Just keep trying it and eventually it will work. It took me about 6 times.
then do a sync and you'll be magically delicious.

Inappropriate?Jade, each time that someone calls me, it sort of interrupts the back up, then asks if I am sure that I want to stop the back up process, so I then click continue with back up. We'll get there, slowly but surely!

Inappropriate?yea i received a bunch of text messages but it kept downloading... it works fine i can make calls but what i am referring to is that you know when u connect the cell phone to the computer and itunes pops out and it tells u "name's iphone?" ok when u click on it, it should show a picture of ur iphone and like how many things u have stored and basically the whole syncing part... i guess it'll get fixed later, not worried too much about it, but i say if we have done everything it should fix that issue, it keeps saying that the store cant connect try later but my iphone works on the homescreen it shows the app store and contacts and the calculator changes when u tilt the phone and so on but whatever ill let time pass lol thanks. :D

Inappropriate?Well it seem as if Apple has not prepared themselves for such a large launch. Perhaps they forgot to beef up their itunes servers to accommodate the activation of all of the new phones from each of the 72 countries they're now in.
Don't worry Apple, I would have overlooked such a small piece of the puzzle myslef.
And to all those suffering out there from the iPhone woes, be it first gen (like myself) or 3g. take comfort in the fact that in a day or two, the server traffic will die down, and we will all get our turn to fix our phones. patience is a virtue. Remember, that not even ten years ago, many of us got by just fine without a cell phone...
So take a deep breath... We will all be OK!

I just kept retrying.. anyway, now it installs then syncs everything EXCEPT MUSIC & PODCASTS & VIDEOS!!! i restarted itunes, the iPhone, and do new install & restore. I had tried downgrading & redoing restores- so i think i might have done something that required the restart & re-restore again.

Inappropriate?If you have an original iPhone in a country unsupported by Apple (had to unlock to recognise sim), and upgraded to 2.0, you need to downgrade back your brick back to 1.1.4. Instructions are here http://sleepers.net/news/?page_id=216
Problematic and quite technical on a Mac, I found.
Bottom line is that you need to surgically remove (most) bits of iTunes 7.7 and DFU restore using old version of iTunes (7.5 is good). That leaves you with 1.1.4 iPhone which is unusable for any modem - calls, sms, wifi - so you have to then downgrade the baseband.
This may take several attempts and at least two hours.
So from an original iPhone owner in Australia's point of view:
DO NOT UPGRADE TO 2.0 YET. It ain't worth it until, if ever, the telcos recognise the original iPhone.

here is the solution for it , well if it is giving you the error 20 then it is becaus
e of the itunes 7.5 and you are running iphone 2.0 the easiest thing is to make your iphone work is this that install itunes 7.7 and if your are struck in recovery mode then restore your iphone 2.0 firmware and remmber to remove itunes completly from your system and reinstall it clean when your iphone 2.0 is installed put the 02 pay as you go sim card when it will be restored the itunes will say to activate it click on continue and enter your apple id if you have or make one and then click on continue and den agree the terms and conditions and den click continue DATS iT!!!!!!!!!!! your iphone will say iPhone is Activated but remember there will be no installer in it anyways the new Appstore App is really cool and i think there must be a way to hack the iphone 2.0 to unlock after doing this like in older firmwares....,

When i connect my phone i get the message "the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.

Answer to your question you need to delete the 7.7 version of the itunes library under you /usr/you/library/itunes, don't forget to rename your itunes folder under the music folder. I have Jail broken iphone (original) too, and I have yet to successfully downgrade to a firmware version lower than 2.0. I even tried using both versions of version 2.0 ispw files , I you cant even restore using 7.7 again remember this is a difference between Restore mode and DFU mode, I believe the combination of correct firmware boot loader portion of firmware which is black screen state of the device would be the less progmatic recovery mode, I have no problem fully restoring the device back to version 2.0 but cannot activate it as I am not and AT&T customer. Hence I just might have to wait a few more days till the guys at iphone-dev.org to release their Version 2.0 PwnageTool hope this helps, but I think apple have really done a number on behalf of AT&T as part of their original deal with profit sharing etc! (this is a guess) to get people to register more original hand sets on the AT&T network, dispite known how important the jail broken devices a led to the success of apple breaking the mobile device market. Props to iPhone Dev Team! Wooot!

the thing is that you are getting that itunes error because you havent removed itunes completly first you have to go to ur usic folder if you are using mac and rename the folder name or move it to trash and if you are using windows then go to my music folder in my documents and do the same thing rename or delete the folder and then do the process which i told before

Inappropriate?i'm having the same problems but with an iPod touch. every time i try to restore it, it says error 1604. it won't ever show up in iTunes. when i unplugged it and tried to turn it on all i got was a connect to iTunes picture. what should i do?
