Does the iPhone have GPS?
I've heard the iPhone lets you use Google Maps, but does it have GPS capability, as well?

Cell phones are required to provide e911 capability, this can be done using a GPS or using cell phone tower triangulation. AT&T has specified that there is no GPS inside the iphone.
Even if it has a GPS, it is a T&C violation to use Google Maps coupled with a GPS for realtime direction lookup. This is due to their contract with the map providers who charge quite a bit more for that.

Inappropriate?Cell phones are required to have e911 capability, and part of that includes the ability to triangulate a position for the caller.
I've been told by a friend of mine who I trust on these issues that most phone's with GPS just expose this capability for consumer use, rather than keep it hidden for only e911 use.
Given that, I would say that yes, the iPhone has GPS capability. It isn't exposed though.

Inappropriate? The 911 GPS feature is not totally the same. Although if it were my guess I would say that the easiest way to allow GPS on the iphone would be via the docking port, a device with memory to hold the maps and a GPS chip with all other functions using the iphones ability is very possible and I would expect to see it from apple in the next 6 months. Thinking at first this would be a headache consider it would really only be used in your car or travel. I guess a bluetooth device would also be possible.

Inappropriate?Does this mean iPhone won't ever expose GPS functionality? This is probably the primary feature I'm holding out for.

Inappropriate? The module for the GPS can be found at:
http://partfoundry.com/iphonegps.html
The pre-order price is not bad either...
Knowing that the iPhone will be hitting the Japanese market soon... I guess the next version of the iphone should have :
HSDPA (3G) , at least 3 Mpix camera, a GPS build in and more storage and even an electronic wallet chip if they really want to put up with debit services such as Felica and suika. These are also being used in North America by American Express, Mastercard and Visa has one too but I have never used it yet (I did used it while I was in Europe, the so called "touch-less" system)

Inappropriate? But do we need to hack the Iphone to make the GPS to work with this module?
-
Inappropriate?Well, the official iPhone SDK which will open the iPhone to any software developer is coming out at Mac World '08. Therefore there will not be a need to hack the iPhone to use an external GPS.

Inappropriate?Where did you get info? I haven't heard anything that Mac will open ?

Inappropriate? On the same note, does the iPhone have the newest version of google mobile maps?
