Got my iPhone wet, and Apple replaced it with a new one...
Call it good karma or luck, but I thought I was doomed to pay an arm and a leg for iPhone repair. I was so amazed they replaced my phone, I thought I'd share my appreciation for the Apple Genius Bar.
Even though I got it wet, the water sensor was undamaged, so they replaced it noting "that is just stopped working." Amazing, truly amazing.

Inappropriate?Did you mention that you got it wet?
My friend spilled water on her macbook rendering it completely useless. She let it air dry for several days and took to back to the apple store, where they came to the conclusion that it must have been "dead on arrival." She simply told them, "It just stopped working."
I think the key is to go in acting a little clueless.
I’m amused

Inappropriate?I told them I got the phone wet, but I agree that saying less is more when dealing with the genius bar. I guess their policy for the iphone is that if the water sensor is not broken, it is is covered under warranty.
-
Inappropriate?Im genuinely surprised. Anecdotal evidence tells me apple tends to stiff people when it concerns replacements for questionable damage. Good to here that sometimes it isn't true!

Inappropriate?hi..i put my iphone in my jacket pocket. I pulled my jacket up when it slides down to the bathroom floor and the iphone flew out of my pocket and got in toilet..I took it out within 1-2 secs..I couldn't turn it off even holding both power and home key..so the screen just gradually turns color from one to another...and then after a while, it just shuts down..i dunno if it's because it burns out or the power went down. I wish the power is off..now i'm just letting it dry. Apple tech told me to let it dry for at least 4 hrs..then charge it, then try to turn on again. If it's repairable, it's 250..if it's not repairable..then they won't even do anything about it. I know it's totally my fault..and I can only wish for the best now. I'm just wondering how did you get it wet..was it drops of water or it drops in water totally? And were you able to turn off?..How long is the inspection for them to repair it?..thx alot..
I’m extremely sad

Inappropriate? My iPhone was rebooting about five to ten times per day. Definitely not normal. I took it in and I couldn't get it to crash no matter how hard I tried -- of course! Well, the fellow at the Genius Bar said, "We'll take your word for it." He just replaced it with a new one. Works like a charm. But, he did say that because this was the flagship San Francisco store, they had more resources and ability to do that. He said if it were a more remote store, they probably wouldn't have replaced it so quickly.
I’m still smiling when I think about it now.
-
Inappropriate?but yours is more of a apple own iphone mis-function issue right?
This will totally be in warranty and likely will be replaced. when i called in apple support, they said water damage isn't covered under waranty.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? My telephone wasn't completely submerged in water (gin and tonic actually) - if you take it to a store, they can tell whether or not the water sensor was damaged. If it was, you'll have to pay the repair fees. The apple geniuses told me that technically, if the water seal wasn't damaged, it is covered under warranty as "just not working."
the water sensor is in the headphone jack.
I’m sad for you

Inappropriate?ugh my friend spilled beer all over the table and i was frustrated that the majority of it got on my jeans. however, the worst part of the night was finding out that my iphone got wet too and now the headphones aren't being recognized. im trying to see if i can tell if this water sensor has changed colors or whatever it is that is supposed to happen, im thinking maybe theres still hope because it wasn't "submersed" but it was a few hours before i even realized it was wet since the beer got inside the case. so now im freaking out that that was enough time to really mess it up. im just crossing my fingers that its still under warranty and theyll be able to fix it for me. my phones only about 2 months old :(
im going into the apple store tomorrow at lunch. eep!
I’m so mad
-
Inappropriate?I wouldn't mention the whole beer thing. They are very quick to replace iPhones. I went in and told them my touch screen wasn't working. Without hesitation or confirming they just gave me a new one. I'd suggest telling them that you're experiencing one of the more common problems.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I must add that this was at the flagship apple store in San Francisco.

Inappropriate?I got my iphone wet, and half the water sensor is a very light pink. Since I don't live near an apple store, I have to mail it in for service. when it first happened it wasn't recognizing the sim card. then after a resore it was recognizing the sim, but now the lower part of the touch screen won't work. I can still "slide to poewr off" but can't unlock. Am I doomed to pay the repair fee or "gulp" buy a whole new phone, or will they not call it water damamge since the water sensor isn't completely changed?
I’m really upset
-
Inappropriate?sounds like your best bet is to take it in, not mention that you got it wet, and hope for the best!

Inappropriate?I just got my iphone on sunday (its wed. night) because my previous phone (treo 680) got stolen. today at lunch i dropped it into my japanese noodle soup, but it was more like.. a fumble and then quickly flinging it out of the bowl.. with a lot more splashing than dunking. at first, it seemed okay - the buttons still worked, but after around 20 seconds it would have the "silent mode" icon popping up and going off, the ringer volume flickering, and sometime when i was trying to get all the liquid out of the bottom the screen went white. the whole screen was white for around 4 hours, and then it went off. but while it was white i couldn't turn it off - it was completely unresponsive. i put it in a bag of uncooked rice (to suck the moister out, i guess? i read it online somewhere..) overnight and going on a fix-it mission tomorrow. i checked the headphone indicator, and half of it is pale pink, but in the right light it looks completely white. what are my chances of my iphone surviving the fatal plunge? any advice on how to work my way into not having to send ridiculous amounts of money?
I’m frustrated like never before.
-
Inappropriate?Noodle soup - bummer! Less is more when communicating with the Apple Geniuses. You could opt for saying it "stopped working" and if they mention the water sensor, you can confide what happened - perhaps not the *entire* noodle soup incident. Honesty and humility are always better than anger, impatience at the mac store. Perhaps they will have mercy on you since it is new. Worst case scenario, you spend $250 for it to go in for service. The other great thing about Apple iPhone service is that you can opt for a loaner phone while they fix yours!
I’m bummed for you!

Inappropriate?Dont ask how i done it, i still dont kno but i dropped my iphone down the toilet and wosrt of all i had no insurance. It was in the water for about 2 secs, when i got it out it was on and i was able 2 turn it off and let it dry in rice for 3 days but it would not trun back on,it was dead :( the water sensor was not damaged but i told the truth about wat happend and apple sent me a new iphone for nothing :)
I’m very very happy and thankful

Inappropriate?I dropped my iphone in the pool....it stayed submerged for 2 minutes until I dove to the bottom and got it. It did not work. I drove to Orlando, and of course, the Genius bar saw that the water seal was busted, they turned me away. 3 days later, I charge the phone, and VOILA....it works. Now what? is there anyway to exchange it?
I’m confused

Inappropriate?I spilled beer on the bottom of my iphone on the right speaker and the charger port. it wasnt much but the message about changing to airplane mode popped up instantly and kept coming up for the rest of night night and next day, it still comes up sometimes but rarely now. the right speaker doesnt work. but the phone does still. the top water sensor in the headphone jack is white but i hear there is a second one, could this one be damaged if i spilled on the speaker? i spilled friday night, its now monday morning, and my battery wont last 2 hrs. is a broken speaker and bad battery enough to get a new iphone? thanks
-
although your iphone has two speaker compartments, only one of them is a speaker, the other is the microphone. -
Inappropriate? My iPhone fell into a cup of water today, only the top half was submerged and I pulled it out immediately, but of course it had to be the headphone jack end. I dried it off and rushed it to the genius bar only to be told the water seal is broken and they can't do anything. The guy was a total jerk to me as I cried in the middle of the Apple store, all I wanted was my phone numbers! So now I'm trying to let it dry out in my car in the heat and I'm going to put it in a bag of uncooked rice tonight. Anymore suggestions for me? When it first happened it looked fine, then lost service. So I tried to turn it off and then the apple logo showed up and then it went dead. AHHHH this thing is like my child! My whole life is in that phone!

Inappropriate? My three your old came running in from the yard with my iphone (she is NEVER allowed to touch it) and says "uh oh". The phone was dripping with water. She sprayed it with the hose. When this happened it wasn't fully charged but as soon as I tried turn it on it didn't do anything. I drove straight to the apple store and they could see the water sensor and said it wasn't covered with apple care. 250 to fix it. I burst into tears (can't even think about paying that, it is only four months old) and ran out of the store. Tonight, just for the hell of it pressed it and it turned on. Put it on the charger and I was able to make a phone call and text too. Starts acting funking, turning off and on but that least now I have hope. I read on line to put it in a bag of rice and those packets that take away moisture. FINGERS CROSSED! Hope at least this means my sim card is ok. My question: is it bad to turn it on?

Inappropriate?I went fishing with my brother in-law and his fishing rod feel in the lake...well I jumped to the rescue, but unfortunately my iphone was in my pocket and I didn't event get the rod back. My iphone died and tried everything but it seems like it was just a bad dream which I can't seems to wake up from it. I felt though I've just lost a set of legs or arms. Everywhere I go now, I felt like I'm handy-cap without my iphone. Just bought it too. Very Very Sad and disappointed... ATT should carry insurance for this product. Can't believe they denied my request for it. Well after all the research I've done seeking, it seems to me that try drying up the phone might work again. So I'm going to wrap it up in a sweatshirt and toss it in the dryer for at least 30 minute and see if it works... HOPE IT DOES... I'll let you guys and gals know what happen later....
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Ya know, this is why the darned things are so expensive - because instead of being careful with your phone, or being honest with what you did, all of you tools are trying to pull one over on Apple...I can only hope that karma takes care of all of you.
I’m PI$$ED

Inappropriate?Hi everyone. I was wondering if there is a way to check that water sensor without taking the iphone apart. Thanks.

Inappropriate? My phone got wet (pepsi wet) yesterday. I took the case off and dried it off and the little "I need charging" pic came up. Then it died. I took out the SIM card and wiped the pop off, put it in some rice overnight...to no avail. I, of course, would lovea new or fixed phone... but what I really need is my calendar stuff as ALL my 2 year olds appts and docs phone numbers are in there. Is there a way to retrieve info?

Inappropriate?well i was at six flags magic mountain yesterday. me and a cupple friends got on a ride called roaring rapids and if you ever been to knots its exactly like big foot but big foot your gunna get soaked no matter what. well we got on not knowing we were gunna get soaked cuz we saw some people comming off the rode and they were mostly dry. we asked the ride attendent can we leave are stuff in a locker or with him (just in case) and he said no there arnt any lockers and we cant hold on to them cuz if something happends blah blah blah. anyways all 4 of us got off SOAKED! first thing i did was pull my iphone out of my pocket and tryed to dry it off it was impossable cuz my whole body was wet. so i grabed some paper towls and dryed it off then hell started. i tryed to turn it off becuz it was 20% low battery and it wouldnt turn off. it cept poping up over and over again with 20% low battery i clicked ok and then the phone froze like that for about 10 min and it turned off. im takeing it to the apple store today. wish me luck :-(

Inappropriate?Got my iPhone wet in the rain, hardly a few drops but i guess it was too late. The water went in through the headphone jack and changed the water sensor to halkf white and half red, so warranty is down the drain! It prompted me to "power off" the iphone, which i did. I tried drying it for a couple of hours with a hair dryer (some 6 inches away from it). It happened yesterday, and its still not powered on. I am now trying to keep it under uncooked rice, wish me luck. I love that gadget, and had just got it some months back. Any suggestions? Is there any way to find out if the circuit hasnt shorted already.

Inappropriate?I dropped my iPhone while running in from the car during a storm, I let it air dry and would not work. I found an article on iphoneatlas.com and said to dry out your iphone you needed to place it in a zip-lock bag with Silica Packets and linked to: http://www.silicagelpackets.com
I ordered some via Priority Mail and let the phone air dry until I got them. I simply placed then in a zip-lock bag and let them in there overnight and tried the phone the next day and it worked perfectly. Maybe it will work for some of you as well, not sure the exact link to the article but you should be able to find it via the web site. -

Inappropriate? My iphone which I bought 9 days ago said the hard goodbye this weekend. All I have to say is there were two forties drank at bedtime and it was a bad idea. Anyway, I left it in the fridge for all of Sat and Sun and that didn't work. Then I thought it was dead and left it in my hot car for two more days. I tried plugging it in last night and the little apple showed up and then the battery. I was very excited to say the least. Then I got all of my missed calls and texts but low and behold, the touchscreen did not work. I had had it in brown rice and had ordered the silicone packets that absorb moisture. They came in today. Within three hours of using the silicone packets my iphone is up and running. There is some hesitation when scrolling down the contacts list but everything is operational. Very, very cool and a great way to save the $250 I was going to have to pay to fix it or the $400 to replace. Highly recommended.

Inappropriate?Boy, everyone has great things to say about those silicone packets. I'm impressed.
