How much memory do I need to get if I buy a mac mini?
I'm a mac newbie, and I'm considering buying a refurbished mac mini for my kid. Most of what he will want to do on it will be web browsing, word processing, and iMovie. I'll probably want to stuck my music collection on it, since it will be in the family room.
How much memory will I need? Can I get away with 512 MB, or do I need to go up to 1 GB for reasonable performance?

Inappropriate?Well, the memory won't be incredibly important if you're just running a few applications at one time. But, here is why you should go ahead and upgrade it: You will get better performance (especially if your kid starts multi-tasking and playing Flash games online), and it's sooo cheap. Check out these RAM prices: http://www.memory-up.com/memory_Finde...
For $30, you can double that RAM on the first generation Mac mini. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the info, Eric. I had the impression that upgrading the RAM in a Intel Mac Mini was a big deal. Not true?
Apple had this on sale last night for $429:
Refurbished Mac mini, 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo
512MB memory
60GB hard drive
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 memory
Good deal? -
Inappropriate?Well, it's definitely doable. You can pry that top off and replace the memory. See here: http://www.macworld.com/article/42237...
I was at one time afraid to do this kind of surgery, but after doing it a number of times, I don't hesitate anymore. Adventure!
You can also try Small Dog Electronics. They have decent prices: http://www.smalldog.com/search/wag125...
That one you saw is a great deal, though. Don't think you'll find a better one.
I’m hoping this helps

Inappropriate?I have a that same one except 1G of ram. I would recommend this amount of memory. I've had it since 2005. Also, I would get the DVD write capablity which I have. I think it's called super drive. It can get a little slow (spinning ball) with a few apps running. Seems adobe reader sucks up a lot resource. One complaint is the wi-fi - never worked very well and now it's broke. I posted that problem up here but no replies yet. hope this helps
