I love you, but you just broke my heart because my iBook is toast.
Now desperate because my computer is DEAD because of a faulty logic board, and I probably won't be able to get my files off of it. I'm on my way to the Genius bar, but am not hopeful.

I don't expect to get a refund for the problem, although that's the least you can do (or pay for a soldiering job - especially since I am a soldier in the Evangelical Apple Movement, too). I'm just frustrated because it's a problem that can be solved, and also because yet another corporation has screwed a customer over. What's sadder still is that I still love the company like a sad puppy, and will probably buy a Macbook after this. It's just the state of Corporate Relations, 2007 I guess.

Inappropriate?rmm,
I feel for you. Sometimes being an Apple Fan(boy/girl) is a double edged sword. I grew up a PC guy, I love gaming too much. It took a text editor (TextMate) to get me to make the investment to switch. I don't regret it, but I feel like I'm trapped with no where to run sometimes.
You know that feeling when something breaks, and you know there is no way that you can make it better yourself? That in the pit of your stomach, things won't be the same again feeling? I've had that more times with my apple products than I have had with *any* other product I've owned. I've fixed a Xbox on my own for gods sake. It's too bad, but like you It doesn't hold enough weight to get me to end the addiction.
I’m sighing

Inappropriate?Hey rmm... How was your situation resolved? Were you able to restore your files?

Inappropriate?mm-
I'm sorry for your hardship - I'm afraid I can't be much help on the logic board/replacement mac front, but since you mentioned your data, I did want to note that said board shouldn't prevent you from getting your data off.
If it's not TOTALLY fried yet, you can but in target firewire disk mode (more here).
Otherwise, if it is complete hosed, pulling the drive and dropping it into another mac, a 2.5" firewire case (Other World Computing has a reasonably priced, easy to use model) or something like the Wiebetech DriveDock for laptop drives should do the trick, and then be cloned over to a new machine. I would ASSUME the apple genius bar would apprise you of these options, but thought I'd mention it in the event you decided to recycle/sell/crush-office-space-style your old (un)reliable. :( -
Inappropriate?Hey Amy,
Well, I was able to get my data off - and because of AppleCare I was able to get the logic board replaced. It's just frustrating because of a) the existing legal situation (i.e. Apple not really addressing the issues brought up in the links I mentioned) and b) because a few months later I'm still having performance issues.
Thanks for the tip, Brendon...yes, am definitely looking into backing up options. Having this issue taken care of (the backing up issue) in the next OS is something I'm looking forward to a great deal. I've pretty much given up on the other one (the faulty logic board).
Ah well - what can you do. Not much...
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?I'm glad you at least got your data off. I've almost lost all my data twice now in the past year. The first time I had to send my fried (Vaio) hard drive into a very expensive data retrieval service that managed to get everything off of it and was worth every penny since I foolishly had no back-up.
I've learned my lesson now and use Mozy to back-up but was having some issues with my Mozy account right around the time I had a problem with my Powerbook so wasn't totally backed up. (Isn't that the way it always happens?) This time, Disk Warrior did the trick. I can't really describe what was wrong or what Disk Warrior did to fix it since I had one of our developers helping me with it. But I'm happy it was fixed. Now I'm on a Macbook Pro and so far so good.
Bummer about the faulty logic board in the first place and that you're still having performance issues!
I'm sure you're backing up now, though. Right?? :)
I’m grateful for Mozy even if it isn't perfect
-
Inappropriate?I'm backing up now thanks to a little Maxtor external drive. I will look into Mozy though...always good to be prepared, as the Boy Scouts say. I've learnt my lesson the hard way - and the logic board issue still frustrates me, but that's the computer industry for you - instant obsolescence...
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Yikes! Speaking of Mozy, I need to figure out what's going on w/ my account. Since I changed computers it hasn't been backing up and I keep forgetting to deal with it. Now that I've said it, I have to deal with it today because Murphy's Law would dictate that if I don't my hard drive will fail and I will lose everything tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder!
I’m a procrastinator that is trying to learn her lesson
