iPod and iTunes won't talk?

My computer crashed and when I installed iTunes again it would not restore the files to the previous settings. Every time I plug in my iPod, it asked to erase and sync. I don't want to do that because I want what is on my iPod....not what is on the newest iTunes? Is there a way to get the iTunes back to iPod settings?
