Is anyone else's Macbook losing plastic around the edge of the keyboard?
This seems to have started by the nubbins on the upper left and upper right of the screen hammering down on the edge of the keyboard. It's all crackly and little pieces of the top plastic are coming off.

Inappropriate?I bought mine from Amazon. It's no longer under warranty. Took it to the Apple store tonight - it was fixed for free in less than an hour, no questions asked.

I got the same problem. Which apple store had you gone to? -
Great! Mine has the same problem. I will go get mine fixed. -
Which Apple store did you use? I know that some are nicer than others... :). This is my second macbook - the first generation one was in and out of the shop with fan problems, disk-drive AND hard-drive failures, and a blank screen. They replaced the keyboard because they said it came attached to the disk drive, but I liked the original keyboard and trackpad, and the second one made a horrible clicky sound.
After 6 months they replaced the whole thing for free with a 2nd-gen one, and I'm very glad that the chipped edge problem is the only issue I've had with this one (although it's still pants).
It started about a year after I got it, and it now has a 3 inch split above the camera, 4 x 1.5 inch broken off bits above each nubbin, on the right side of the keyboard and on the left wrist rest - all of which I have glued back on (not advisable I know, but the warranty was up anyway), 4 inch splits on both sides of the keyboard section and 3 inches actually missing from the right wrist rest.
I'm basically surgically attached to my laptop, so I will have to ring ahead to check if the part is in stock so I can have the while-you-wait service. I was also thinking of walking in with a low-cut top, bursting into tears and generally looking pathetic until they help me. I will pay them if necessary, but I wouldn't be happy about it - it's such an obvious design flaw. -
Inappropriate? So is mine! and I am livid. I also had cosmetic damage from the plastic case they sold me as well. The case did not prevent it from being scratched, in fact the case they sold me destroyed the outside of my computer, with severe scratches. After I got this situation resolved a month later small cracks were forming along the edge of my computer. I m bummed because I have only had my computer for less than 2 years, and pissed that they cant do anything about it. I think there should be a class action lawsuit against them. Let me know if anyone hears of anything.

Inappropriate?I have this problem too right now so I just put tape on it. You all said Apple can replace the case for free. Do they also do it even when you're warranty's expired? I've had this Mac for about two years now but the peeling started about a year when I got it.
So glad I found this page! My friend is also having the same problem. This page helps! -
That's the power of a community. Apple has done a good job in replacing the topcases... -
They have done a great job of replacing them, although they replaced mine, and it's now broken again -- and out of warranty. I haven't trucked myself to the Genius Bar again because I assume they won't replace it for free out of warranty. Maybe they need to work on fixing the top case, and not just the act of replacing it. -
@ Eric: I think that's the reason why they made the new aluminum ones. I know those ones won't break. I do hope they replace my casing even if I'm out of warranty. I'm going to the Apple store tomorrow and I'll post here again to let you all know if they replace it even without the warranty. But you're right, they really should work on our Macbook's case coz eventually we'll get tired of bringing it to the store and have it replaced everytime it's broken. -
I'd love to hear how it goes! Yeah, I think you're right about the aluminum ones. As nice as the MacBooks are (I love mine), the casing is kind of a problem, and I am sure that factored into their recent rev to the aluminum version. I want one of the new ones so bad. They're about to stop offering the old version completely. I'd love to hear what they say when you take it in. -
Inappropriate? They replaced mine but was still under warranty.

Inappropriate?I had my case replaced after it was cracked all over after about 6 months old , but when i took it in it was 3 days over warranty, after alot of hassle and back and fourth to the shops , phone calls e mails etc , they replaced it for free. With what looks like the same casing used in the problem macbooks.
3 months on, it is showing sighs of weakness around where the magnets touch the top key case . Not happy really . they should just have put an aliminium case on as these ones are crap . Anyone managed that or know how to get them to do that ? chris .Uk and Norway
I’m Think they are better at taking your money than customer satisfaction

Inappropriate?Add one more person to the list. I was surprised to see pictures of the exact same crack on my machine. I bought mine in early 2008, so I've had it for about 18 months. I I have also had two iPhones replaced in 1 year. I'm less than impressed with Apple's quality in the last few years.

Inappropriate?Yes, Apple will replace the chipped area BUT, they replace it with the same defective material. Therefore several months down the road it will chip again. They have replaced mine more than once but what happens when I'm out of warranty? Then I'm stuck with this defective product.
-
Inappropriate? They've replaced mine twice (in warranty). The first time, they told me it was a defective part. The second time they told me it was my fault because I close it too hard - whatever that's ridiculous. It's cracked again now - I hope it's still in warranty but then I'm going to be without my computer for days - again.
-
Inappropriate?Apple is in the process of replacing my palm rest, plastic around the display and the plastic at the base of the computer. Over the phone I expressed my concern to the Apple rep handling my case..."it's being replaced with the same defective material and will eventually crack again". I also explained that I thought it was unfair to those whose warranty had expired. He said that even if your applecare is expired, Apple will continue to replace your palm rest (but no other area). So that' some good news.
I just hope they stick to their promise...and that nothing else cracks again except for the palm rest.
