Lossless on computer, lossy on iPod

I'd like Apple Lossless files on my computer and lossy, smaller file-size files on my 30Gb iPod Video. I understand that the iPod Shuffle allows you to convert files to a smaller format when sending them to the iPod. It would be good if the functionality could be added for other iPod models.
