Mac Pro Does Not Startup Occasionally
I have a Mac Pro Intel, 3.0 Ghz Quad Core that occasionally refuses to start up. I've taken it to the Apple Store three times now, and they have not been able to fix the problem. Does anyone know why this might be occurring.
The typical scenario looks something like this:
I shut down the machine - let's say at night.
When I come into the office in the morning and hit the power button - nothing happens. No light, nothing.
That's it. It's intermittent which is why this is a problem for me and the Apple Store.

Inappropriate?Has the power switch been replaced by Apple already? If not look into that... Also, I would say that it could be something shorting out on the motherboard or a bad PSU...
I would also ask for the motherboard to be swapped with a new one -
Inappropriate?Alex,
Thanks so much. The Apple folks have not done either of those things. I'm not sure that the power switch is having an issue. It seems to perform consistently, but I believe it IS the Power Supply Unit.
I'm hoping to take it in and have it replaced.
Thanks,
Drew

Inappropriate?I have this problem with an early 2009 Mac Pro.
The first time it happened I booked it in at the nearest Apple store, but of course it started first time for the technician. He showed me how to reset the SMC, which was good cause when I got it home it wouldn't start up again. Eventually the SMC reset trick worked, and it ran fine for the next couple of months. But now I have the same problem again so once I have got all my data backed up I will be requesting a replacement.

Inappropriate? So my Mac Pro is now thankfully working again.
The trick to reseting the SMC on my machine is to unplug all cables open the case and press the SMC reset button, then leave the machine alone for at least 20 minutes. Only then reconnect the power lead and try starting the machine up.
