Inappropriate?I have had this issue with two separate new (late 2008) MacBook 13" laptops. I returned the first one over this issue but have the same problem with the second one. Both of them have had the same problem with two separate 20" Apple cinema displays. After the computer goes to sleep, when it comes back on the external monitor image flickers on and off, contains lines of static or a few times just came up with a full screen of random noise. There is no way to fix it except to unplug the monitor, sleep and unsleep the computer and plug the monitor back in again.
Apple has told me several times they are aware of the issue, and that it affects all or nearly all of the new (late 2008) MacBooks and MacBook Pro's with the Mini Display port. They say they are working on a firmware upgrade to solve it, but they will not give any update on the progress of the upgrade or when it's expected to be ready. I was hoping it would be part of the firmware upgrade released this week (about 12/10/08), but that didn't fix it, I just called support and Apple says they're still working on it.
This is uncharacteristic of Apple to have a major design problem like this, and they really need to get it solved fast, or they risk looking like they're more interested in selling the new-generation cinema displays than making a computer that people can use with the existing displays they may have bought just a few months ago. Personally I'll let this go another month or two but pretty soon will be ready to demand a refund or else a complementary new-generation cinema display!
I am going to cross-post this complaint on a few more blogs right now to be sure that the public is aware of this issue. Frankly, until this issue is resolved, Apple should be required to advertise that their new generation laptops are not compatible with their older DVI displays. If you are having this problem, I encourage you to cross-post this issue as well to put more pressure on Apple to solve it quickly. As far as I'm concerned their engineers should be working on almost nothing else until it is fixed.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?fredo:: Thanks!! I have been living with this issue since I brought my Macbook 13" a month ago, (sort of) good to see other people are having the same issue!
I am going to ring Apple just so it has another person putting pressure on the issue!
I’m frustrated

I noticed on another site someone suggested typing control-shift-eject which forces the monitor to reset. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but if it works, should be easier than unplugging and plugging it in while apple gets their s**t together. If anyone tries it and it works, let us know on here! -
Inappropriate?Well I started calling the Apple support and they initially declined to have heard about this before, and they told me that I should have brought my MacBook to them for a test. The test could have last also more than a week, cause they wanted to test my cable and my Monitor too, and all the possible combinations with other devices.
Well I need to laptop to work, I can't stay without it for a week, so I started to look around, and found also this page. It seems that it is indeed a known issue, I decided to call Apple support again, and it came out that they were aware of it too... argh!!! I've been assured that the problem was really high in priority and would have been solved with a fix very soon.
I very hopefully waited for it, and installed the last too Firmware update, one about the "Battery scale accuracy" (officially) but nothing, for me the problem is still there, and is becoming really annoying.
Apple can it be that you forgot to test with your own monitors going into sleep mode? I would understand if the problem would occur with some "unknown" third party hardware, but here we are playing in known territory!?
Please fix this :-(

Inappropriate?Ctrl-Shift-Eject works for me to fix the issue! Now I don't have to unplug and plug back in and move all my windows, thanks!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Yes, Ctrl-Shift-Eject works for me too. Apple should be recommending it, not making people search the Web for it. It's by far the easiest way to 'fix' this.
I’m not satisfied, though.
-
Inappropriate? Can it be that has been fixed in 10.5.6? I don't experience the behavior anymore... Great trick with Ctrl-Shift-Eject, works here too ;-)
I’m Confident

Inappropriate?I have a similar issue. I have an external display that I use with the new gen Macbook. When I close the laptop, the external display becomes the active display and it works fine. However, when I open the laptop after it has gone to sleep, I cannot get the laptop's screen to become active... I assume this is a related issue.
-
Yes, that's a known issue. Once you wake your late-2008 MacBook from sleep, it incorrectly assumes that your external display is the internal display and therefore has no reason to activate the true internal display once the MacBook is opened. Apple is apparently working on a fix. -
Inappropriate?I have this issue too on my new unibody Macbook Pro. After waking from sleep, my external monitor is covered in random (digital) noise. It's like an untuned TV channel! :) Flickers considerably, and the only thing visible to any extent is the top task bar. unpluggin the display port and reinserting solves the issue.
I know my brother had the same problem on his MBP and Apple replaced it. I don't think he has the same issue any more on his new one.
I'll try ctrl-shift-eject and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip.

Inappropriate? You're right on my new MBP (2.66GHz version) it seems ok so far. Apple are being very coy on this issue. I've had this issue with three MBP's so far!
