MacBook line-in not working after Leopard upgrade.
13" MacBook vintage 8/06. It could have occurred with a Tiger update, but using my simple headset no longer allows input via line-in. Tried new Shure PG-58 (w/ Griffin w/ XLR converter cable) with equal silence. Any OS bugs introduced? Frankly doubt hardware, but would rather do a USB workaround with iMic, no time to waste debugging either Bill or Steve's products. Thoughts?

Inappropriate? You need a pre amp for your Shure PG-58, you can get USB or firewire ones for as low as $55. I personally like the Behringer XENYX 502 Mixer:

cheers!

Inappropriate?Hi All,
I'm sure Alex is correct given my lack of audio background, except for my HAM radio background. My understanding was that Dynamic microphones do not require phantom power as opposed to condensing mics, per: http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/mic...
Either way, my problem was resolved to my own chagrin by discovering that the cheapo headphone/mic combination was mechanically malfunctioning -- the mic was kaput. Then going back to my Shure PG-58 I did discover that one must turn the "O N/ O F F" switch to the "ON" position :( Garageband now records this aspiring voice over talent star.
Of course, it does not address the post-Leopard flakiness of my wireless connection. Maybe, another day.
Happy Holidays,
Marty
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I have always used a pre-amp for mics. If your shure mic works great without one then I will have to try the Griffin microphone XLR cable. It could have a mini amp chip build into the connector or something along those lines. It would actually save me from having to carry a pre-amp and cables around. Thanks for the info.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Hi everyone! I'm new. I have a PG-58 and a Mac running Tiger too (iMac though) and I find GarageBand only receives sound from the mic on the left side of who-knows-what, for I can only hear it on the left earphone and very, very softly. The only way I've found to use it is to set the track to Mono 1 and increase the Compressor's Gain setting up to about 30, only to get a very loud and noisy result. Would I really have to buy a pre-amp to fix this issue? Thanks for your help!

Inappropriate?Would iMic do the job? Cheers!

Inappropriate?I bet your mic is connected to a regular xlr-to-mono-mini jack (one black stripe). I am hoping the 'garageband XLR cable" with built in preamp will do the trick. i need the same thing. hope we dont need to buy separate preamp.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?we're having a similar issue with all are analog mics that don't have pre-amps. None of our headsets have working inputs now. Looks like Apple decided to rely on external devices to provide juice for amplification in order to lower power consumption on their computers.
