Could I possibly make my Powerbook lid magnetized with some small adhesive magnet strips?

Inappropriate? You have to be careful with magnets around hard drives and electronics in general, though obviously the Macbooks use magnets for the power connector. I wonder how strong the magnets would need to be to keep the lid closed, and how this could be hacked together without endangering the equipment.

Inappropriate? And they have magnet for the lid. I mean it would literally be two thin strips on top of the casing to enable it to close. I wouldn't think it would be strong enough to corrupt data on the hard drive?

Inappropriate?I've got the same problem with an old G4 powerbook and thought the same thing.. did you do it in the end?
Any repercussions?

Inappropriate?I did get there in the end, after a few times trawling through ebay I managed to get a broken powerbook that was for spares and salvaged the magnet mechanism/lid button. You can find some good guides around- Ifixit.com or something

Inappropriate?Cheers for the reply Sam, there is the bottom half of a Powerbook on ebay for £45 but I don't have the chestnuts to take it apart and put it back together again.
I’m not man enough for that!

Inappropriate? If its just the bottom half then you all you need to do is take the top cover off and take the latch mechanism out (held down by adhesive tape) and also unplug the cable for the sleep light and put it in your laptop with some glue (I used glue instead of adhesive.
Hope that doesn't sound too complex, all you really need is a small screwdriver for the top cover and just go for it! -
Inappropriate?Hello,
I just used a safe alternative to magnets... good 'ol Velcro! the only issue is it won't hold it closed tight enough to put the computer to sleep.
