My Airport Express, setup as a WDS remote with an Airport Extreme, keeps dropping internet connectivity after a few hours.
I recently bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station (Gigabit, 802.11n) and replaced my older (c.2005) Airport Express with it as my main network router. Now I want to use the older Express as a WDS remote to extend the network.
I've got everything configured properly through the setup wizard and all is well for several hours after setup-- I'm able to connect wirelessly to the network and connect to the internet. Both the Base station and the remote show Green status lights. All is well.
Then, 4-5 hours later, although the status lights are still green and I can connect to the network wirelessly, my internet connection is lost. And 'Internet Connect' only shows me connected to the Express (MAC address)... and Airport Utility only displays the Express, not the Extreme..
Separately, using either unit as a base station with no remote, I have no problems, everything works flawlessly.
There's a pretty lengthy discussion about this issue on the Apple Support forums (here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.j...) with no resolution-- apart from the hope that Apple will release a new Express revision that may address the problem.
Please don't tell me, Apple, that the solution to this issue is for me to spend more money. Please.

Inappropriate?Have you had any luck with this? I have been trying to figure this one out, and I've shared this problem with a lot of people, some with a significant amount of networking experience, but I still don't know the answer. I also saw the Apple forum posts, and I am surprised at the number of people with this problem. I also see the folks saying they get their posts taken down (or not posted) as Apple Store reviews because they're being critical of Apple, which I hate to hear.
Still having this problem? I want to keep at this and see if we can't get an answer.
I’m still working at it

I can't begin to count the number of times I've tried to get Express to play nicely with Extreme. The tech support was good, but they didn't help me connect to PC via Express, so no love in the end.. -
Inappropriate? No update. You're right.. lots of people on the Apple Support forums reporting the same (or similar) issue.
Haven't heard anyone report their posts being removed.. over the years I've seen plenty of posts critical of Apple and have always appreciated that Apple leaves the forums alone. Although I'm distressed that no one has responded with anything helpful.. or even an acknowledgement that there's an issue.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? You can't use WPA or WPA-2 with a WDS. You have to extend the range of your network from your main access point.
Make sure that all the devices you are setting up are using the same network name.
When using the airport extreme make sure to extend network range.
When using an airport express make sure to join an existing network.
If setup properly, you will see two devices; one will be the Airport Express and the other will be the Airport extreme.
These two steps will help. -
twerpo, do I understand this correctly? No WPA or WPA2 on WDS? 1) Why not, and 2) how do you protect your WDS-netword?
Thanks,

Inappropriate?I just bought an Apple Time Capsule (1 TB hard drive on a router / mini hub) which hangs off an Extreme I already had as my router/minihub. I moved my iTunes library to the Time Capsule where I can run it from several different systems in the house. I just bought an Airport Express so I can, via ethernet or over the air, play my iTunes music on a console and have the output go through the Express and out the Audio Out to my home stereo speaker system. I configured it all over the last 24 hours and it worked....and then it died! Primarily Airport Express which keeps going to flashing Amber light and is not even visible in the Airport Utility!! I am pretty frustrated as I am a technical guy and have spent hours on APPLE products and they are UNRELIABLE. I am debatingon returning the Express as it is not a good product. I either need a fix or will be asking for a refund.
I’m very frustrated!
