my iPod & my iTunes aren't speaking to one another anymore

When I first got my iPod Nano 16Gb, I was able to sync my music with iTunes from my iPod. I read that it being on autosync songs helped that work, but I never had it set that way. I have always manually managed my music. I used to be able change the title on iTunes and it would happen automatically on my iPod the next time I synced up.

It also used to transfer my ratings for songs I puit on my iPod from my iTunes. That stopped working. That helped me remove songs I no longer liked by clearing them from my iTunes if they had low ratings. I didn't change the way I did anything either. It just spontaneously stopped. What gives?
