My Macbook sometimes doesn't wake up from sleep mode after I open it
It normally wakes up just fine, but sometimes the screen remains off. For some reason it's not recognizing the trigger to end sleep mode. The solution for me is either to hit the brightness key (F2) a bunch of times (this worked on my old Powerbook), or hold down the shift button while touching the trackpad or space key (Macbook Pro).

Inappropriate?I get this once in a while too. I usually press enter, and then close and open it, and then maybe hit some buttons. Eventually it comes back alive.
Thanks for the other tips, I'll try those next time!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I had this happen to me and brought it into the Apple store for repair. Turns out it was a logic board failure caused by sensor not properly working and had to be swapped out.

Presumably under AppleCare? How much if you're not covered anyone? -
Inappropriate?I've had this happen, too, and just figured it was a weird thing that happened sometimes. Posh--were you able to reproduce your problem at the Apple store?
-
Inappropriate?I personally couldn't reproduce it, since it's such a random occurrence, but the apple repair tech had seen the issue in other Macbook Pros. It did fail their hardware test, giving an error 4SNS/1/40000000 or something like that he said.

Inappropriate?Yeah, for the most part, the "lid experience" for an apple is much better than many PC manufacturers
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I've had the experience with both PCs and Macs but as Scott said its been a much better experience with my Macbook.

Inappropriate? This happens with my MacBook sometimes too. Usually just messing with it (open, close, smack the spacebar a million times) gets its attention. Mine also sometimes gets in this weird "backwards state" where closing it wakes it and opening it puts it to sleep. Boy, does that make me mad. In those cases, I have to close it, wait for it to fall asleep on its own and then open it to wake it.

Yup. That's my issue too. MacBook Pro circa Dec 2006. Are then new new MacBooks seeing this issue too? -
I've seen exactly this problem on both my Macbooks (2007 black & 2008 white (non-aluminum) in both Tiger and Leopard. I'll close the lid and put the laptop down for the night, then when I come back to it, the Macbook is warm and the power light is on solid, like it never went to sleep. Opening the lid turns the light off and the Macbook appears dead. Closing the lid turns the light back on solidly. I tend to sleep them daily and this happens maybe once every few weeks. They're wireless and have no peripherals plugged in and are always on the charger. I've tried a number of things to wake them up but always end up having to just power cycle them. I've re-installed the OS on both of them and keep them updated constantly. They do both have nearly identical applications installed (which I tend to load right after reinstalling the OS), so it could be a software conflict. -
just got a new MBP in august 2009 and am having this exact same backwards issue -
Inappropriate? My Powerbook doesn't just do it occasionally. It does everytime now. I can't let it fall asleep b/c otherwise it needs a restart....
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Just so people know this is a feature not everyone has a bad logic board
what happens??

Inappropriate?I've had this recently and don't know why. I randomly hit some buttons in frustration, and F7 (or fn-F7) told the Macbook pro to look for a monitor or another monitor and it woke up but thought it had another monitor plugged in. strange, but it woke/lit up. I had to restart the computer to have it not think there was still another monitor (the brightness controls had no effect in this confused state). I have had it happen twice with the second time using this solution as a quick fix.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?I have an Apple PowerBook G4...upgraded memory from 512 to 2G and then the laptop did not wake up....I have not determined what to do yet....it is definitely associated with memory in my instance....the 512 is as reliable as the sun....the 2G checks good in memory tests....it's a design issue and perhaps a software fix will solve it....resetting NVRam does nothing to help.
-
Inappropriate?I found that the problem is caused by an overused CPU at the time of 'waking up' the laptop, if you move the mouse around and then wait it should wake the screen up within 90 seconds. i do believe it has to do with how the memory is cached when putting the laptop to sleep
I’m TIRED

That makes perfect sense! Thanks for the update. -
Thanks! -

Inappropriate? There's also a known issue with connected Bluetooth devices when Leopard wakes from sleep. This usually happens to me if I've had my Mighty Mouse connected when I sleep my MBP, and then later wake it when the mouse is not present.
Turning off / disconnecting the mouse before going to sleep fixes the problem for me.

Inappropriate? This is indicative of a hardware deadlock or livelock interrupt handler. On my PowerBook G4 1.67 Tiger, I suspect it is caused by Apple overclocking their supplied PC2-4200 DDR533 RAM to 333Mhz, while I have 3rd party JEDEC standard PC2-4200 RAM (which is only rated to 266Mhz) installed.
I’m Cynical
-
outer that isn't really useful information, it's more opinion -
Well, I've just put my money where my mouth was and replaced my memory with two 1G PC2-5300 4-4-4-12 modules. We'll see. -
interesting! -
So far all is good: on my benchmarks: so, slightly faster in raw memory access, but slightly slower in streaming. Overall the same. The only problem I've encountered is that the system reports that the installed RAM as being PC2-3200S-2-6-6 (a non-existent configuration for DDR2 SODIMM RAM) instead of PC2-5300-4-4-4-, so I guess I'm paying a performance penalty of 1/7 (that would be 12/14) in latency. Not an noticeable, and barely measurable, penalty.
To come back to Thor's problem, I'll let you all know whether I have any success. You can't prove a negative, but so far - early days - so good.
Anyone here remember the underrated capacitors on the original Apple Graphite Airport base stations?

Inappropriate?Hi, I have had not waking from sleep issues on both my macbook pro and iMac. I made a few posts on my blog you might like to look at:
http://www.davidjmoore.com/2008/08/28...
http://www.davidjmoore.com/2008/09/10...
and finally a summary post on all the other issue I am having or have had this yeah.
http://www.davidjmoore.com/2008/09/13...
I hope you find the post informative even if they only show that we share the same problem :) -
Inappropriate?I no longer have this problem. One of the last two major software updates fixed it entirely (10.5.3, I think).
I’m relieved.
-
Inappropriate?I sometimes get this problem with my MBP, and find that sometimes restarting it once in a while solves the problem. Leaving it on sleep all the time probably isn't too good for it.
I’m unconcerned
-
It happened to me a few times , I got worried and took it to the apple store, the genius guy told me to simply zap the pram and it works.
When this happens I zap the pram and it doesn't come back for months
so I suspect he was right on when he mentioned the pram gets corrupted often.
my macbook is the best laptop I have ever owned absolutely fantastic , I can't even compare it to my dell it wouldn't be fair to dell
PS
I rarely turn it off... it is usually sleeping -
Inappropriate? When this happened to me on my PowerBook G4, I had to update the "power manager" which involved downloading new firmware. Do a google search on "updating power manager + your computer model" and see if you don't find a simple set of instructions.
Don't bother searching the apple support forums ... ugh!
I’m hoping this helps
-
Inappropriate?I've looked elsewhere for a fix for this. I use other monitors with my MacBook and always have a problem with waking from sleep. It should be an easy fix for a programmer, usually i just disconnect the power supply, close the lid and then reopen to make it wake. I use a keyboard and a USB mouse with this system as well and it needs to be disconnected to make it wake and allow me to log in. Sometimes I have to log in twice, sometimes I have to hold the power button down to make it let me log in.
Lame dumbass problem that causes mild aggravation when you are in a hurry.
Otherwise it's flawless. Love my MacBook, use it daily and it makes me many $$$$$$!

Inappropriate?Hi I spillt coffie in it dried it out 2 days latter it would work with charger lead 2 swich on i am 12 years old
I’m sad best laptop in the world appel macs are cool

? How did the coffee solve the problem ?? -
Inappropriate?hold the shift key while pushing the off/on button. i tried these other things and they didn't work, so i just tried this way and out of luck it worked.
:)
I’m smart...
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem way too often now, and my MBpro is less than a year old, it happened a couple or 3 months after receiving it. It just happened twice in the past week (now and a few days ago).
I'll try some of the key/button slapping techniques mentioned here before sending it off for sensor replacement.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I have had this problem for about three weeks now, I phoned apple yesterday, but found out I needed to pay $49 if I wanted to talk to them!
But the guy gave me a tip anyway and told me that if you take the battery out and hold the power button for 10 seconds it resets the charge or something, and that might work. It didn't for me, but it might for some of you.
I’m hopeful
