Randomly dropping WIFI connection
My MacBooks Pro is losing its WIFI connection at random intervals, again and again. Can be an hour, can be 2, or thirty minutes. This is really a major annoyance, as it's causing me service interruptions and data loss.
Here are a few hints:
This is only happening at my home office. I haven't had this problem at other places, although I know from online forums that many people are having this problem, too (even though they're not at my place :) )
This problem hasn't occured before an OS update that I installed through Software Update, but I don't remember which update it was - it's been a while...; my world was soft and smooth before that (MBP wise at least!)
Once the MBP has lost the connection, I have to manually re-connect to my network even though the password is stored in the keychain and the MBP connects automatically under "normal" circumstances (wakeup from sleep, reboot, etc).
My network is protected with a "Personal WPA". I've tried a diferent router that used WEP, but that didn't help.
There are a few other wireless networks in this building.
I've tried switching Channels. No difference.
This has been going on for months without a solution from Apple.
Please someone fix this or at least talk about it. Even only something like "We're aware of the problem" would make feel a bit more confident.
Thanks,A.

Inappropriate?Oh, and I'm currently running Leopard (10.5.2); it's a 1st generation MBP (2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM). Problem started under Tiger.

Inappropriate?I had this same problem in the last few weeks, and it was driving me crazy! After countless hours of messing with it, here's what seems to work for me: I started over and created a new WiFi network with my Airport Express. I can't explain why it helped, but it seems to have fixed it. It seemed to be my computer that had the problem, and not the Airport Express, but this did it for me. You can even dig down and delete preference files, but I didn't have to.
Have you already tried this strategy? -
Inappropriate? Thanks Eric; I've tried your suggestion and it seems like I've identified the culprit. I haven't had a disconnect since I've removed my AirPort Express a couple of hours ago. I'll keep it like that for a day, just to see whether that really makes a difference; but for now, it seems as the AirportExpress is causing the difficulties. Which is ... strange.
I’m confused

Inappropriate?Alright, so this day passed by without a disturbance. The Airport Express seems to have caused the interruptions. I'll re-connect it and see what tomorrow brings...
I’m anxious. Life without WIFI music? Yikes!

Inappropriate?Alright,so since this topic has got a few followers, I better do a follow-up regarding my experience ;)
Basically, my WIFI has been working without any interruptions for a month now.
I switched my router back to WEP authentication, reset my Airport Express and had no problems ever since.
Pretty simple. I hope it works for others, too.
I’m happy and thankful

Inappropriate?I am having that same problem. I have an all Mac network, Airport Extreme (n) Mac Pro, Mac Air, and a Powerbook. My wireless network is always 3 to 4 bars but occationally I effectively look all connectivity. Its not an issue with my cable provider because the local network is dead ... so it MUST be an issue with the wireless. When the error occurs the light on the Airport is green and all lights on the Cable modem are as they should be.
I can only guess that this is a software issue since it occurs on radically different hardware (MacPro, MacbookAir, and Powerbook). I seem to see the issue more since the latest Security Update ... but I can't confirm this.
I'll also try the suggestion to drop the config and recreate it and see if it helps. It just seems odd that its so pervasive. Granted, I keep all our home machines current with new code updates so perhaps that is the cause.

Inappropriate?Same here (alu-imac, 24', 3 Ghz). I tried different routers already (all b/g). My "old" alu-imac (24", 2,4 Ghz) without "n-draft" did not show any problems in exactly the same place with the same router. All other devices (Sony notebook, Iphone, Wii) can use the wireless network without any problems. Really sounds like a firmware/software problem to me.

Inappropriate?I've got this problem too with an alu iMac. But it's a Mac Os problem : when I lost wifi with the Mac, other machines works fine (an iPod touch for example) on the same Airport Extreme base. The networks works fine, but not the iMac.
I’m angry

Inappropriate?I have this same problem with an early 2008 Macbook Pro. Problem worse on the wifi network in my office and when traveling for business than it is with my home router. Extremely frustrating to pay top dollar for a "Ferrari" computer and have it useless for much of business. When is Apple going to acknowledge the problem and take care of it?
