Sync process hanging Leopard 10.5.7 on Macbook Pro
I've searched the web for an answer to this but can't find anything addressing it. In brief, my new (2 weeks) Macbook Pro 13 stalls (with/without spinning rainbow) and I've noticed this possible culprit in the console app. I can't seem to identify what app is responsible for this and am hoping that someone out there has an answer:
"15/Jul/09 15-Jul-09 9:27 kernel /drv/ MacAsyncDevice.cpp:229 Wait for host_wait_work_complete_async_device (02:00) finished with timeout."
Can anyone tell me what is generating this? I have multiple successive instances every time my system hangs.
Note that this was only experienced once I migrated to my new system using the migration assistant in case this information is relevant to the issue.

Inappropriate?Pendolino, I have the same issue with my brand new (3 weeks old) MBP 15". I suspected it being TimeMachine or faulty memory. What you describe is exactly how my machine reacts, but I have no MacAsyncDevice in my logs.
I have also run a test on my memory but to no avail. Keen to find out what is causing this. I also migrated to this machine from a TimeMachine backup.
I’m frustrated with an otherwise awesome machine

it is quite frustrating i know. i plan to call apple support if i dont get firm answers in the next couple of days. i know that some people reinstall the OS to try to fix issues like this but i dont have the same inclination to spend time and energy on a possible fix that may or may not work.
i migrated from machine to machine btw and skipped the TM backup.
also note that I have TM set on manual backup because it was backing up too frequently and using too many resources as a result on my older MacBook so I don't think its related to that. -
Yeah, true. I've been unwilling to do a complete reinstall due to the time it will take. I wonder if it is worth waiting on Snow Leopard but that means accepting the BBOD untill September.... -
Inappropriate?fyi i've already posted this issue on apple's forums as well here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.j... and there was a response to check mobileme settings to manual but i dont use mobileme.

Inappropriate?A related symtom is after watching about 30 minutes of video (in VLC) my MBP freezes up completely. Do you have this too?
BTW it seems like anything that needs a combination of disk activity and loading it into memory stalls the machine. I've done an extended memory check but nothing to indicate RAM failure.
I’m going crazy over this...
-
on your first point, no i have not experienced any video related hangs or pauses worth nothing but I also don't use VLC too often or watch much video on my Macbook.
regarding your second point, im tending to agree after noticing when it happens.
what do you use to do memory checks?
im also getting suspicious of firefox. the next time the problem comes up i might just use safari for a while to see if it helps. its more stable that's for sure. -
Inappropriate?i just got another hang/pause that lasted for about 20 seconds. this was the console message:
"19/Jul/09 19-Jul-09 15:10 /usr/libexec/hidd[30] IOHIDEventQueueEnqueue: Error enqueuing memory. (0xe00002e8) "
i've also logged this on apple's discussion forum at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.j... -
Inappropriate?got this error again but this time WITHOUT FIREFOX running so that eliminates that app likely.
"20/Jul/09 20-Jul-09 20:26 /usr/libexec/hidd[40] IOHIDEventQueueEnqueue: Error enqueuing memory. (0xe00002e8) "
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?problem shows up again. not using firefox. was using safari this time. console has repeated instances of the following message (20?) at that time:
"21/Jul/09 21-Jul-09 23:06 kernel /drv/ MacAsyncDevice.cpp:229 Wait for host_wait_work_complete_async_device (02:00) finished with timeout." -
Inappropriate?happening again. this time i can eliminate my dropbox client app as it was not running.

Inappropriate?Hi Pendolino, the program I use to test the memory is Rember, however running that while the OS is running isn't conclusive. It gave no errors.
I also ran the Apple Hardware Test but also no trouble found.
I'm beginning to believe it has to do with because restoring from backup, incorrect preference files or system files have been copied.
I think I can test this thesis by using a different user account and trying some extensive work there to see if this is indeed the trouble.
In other words I do think it is software based not hardware fault. Which is good news I guess....
I’m getting closer to the truth...

i think im beginning to agree with you although it would make me much happier to figure out what the notorious MacAsyncDevice is or comes from. -
Inappropriate?update: today i reinstalled parallels for mac v4.0 and it seems to have taken care of my error messages and overall hangs. i will keep monitoring and update.
I’m confident

sorry i spoke to soon. its the next day and the problems are back it seems. maybe i will try an archive and install. -
Inappropriate?I tried a few more things:
1. Logged into newly created account. However not much luck.
Still the same issues and hanging all over.
2. Seems to be less when I only use one application at a time. Using Photoshop and Mail especially seem to hang often. However watching move streams in flash or silverlight seem fine. I find that strange as watching a DVD or divx will hang very dependably after about 30 minutes.
I don't think I can wait until Snow Leopard comes out, before needing a fix.... -
stefan - check out the apple discussion forums. looks like our issues may be related to faults with hard disk or related software. the situation is pretty much exploding on the forums and specifically with 500GB seagate and hitachi (mine) drives. -
stefan - i just wanted to let you know we seem to have gotten to the bottom of this. you have to downgrade the EFI firmware until apple releases a better solution. see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.j... -
Inappropriate?Hi Pendolino, thanks for that. Looks like this is the answer. Will try to downgrade the Firmware to 1.6 and let you know if it fixed it for me.
