The iPhone isn't syncing to my Macbook via bluetooth!
It doesn't connect. What am I doing wrong? I'm assuming this is possible (my old phone would sync over bluetooth).

Yeah, the bluetooth on the iPhone does *nothing* useful (except headsets which in my view isn't very useful). You can confirm this when you do the pairing between your macbook and the iphone; it will show you what "services" are available, and report "none".
Not being able to synch wirelessly is one of the nice WTF experiences of the 1.0ishness. I didn't expect to be able to use the iphone as a modem for my macbook (tho i would love to), bt i certainly expected sync to work.

Inappropriate?I do not believe this is supported. Bluetooth on the iPhone is only for headsets/speakerphones

Inappropriate?Yeah, I'm really surprised that this doesn't work. Even my crappy old Sony Ericsson phone synced flawlessly via Bluetooth! Alas, one more cable to carry around in my bag...
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I am shocked the bluetooth doesn't work as it always does with other mobile phones!!! it's really REALLY sad
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?to think I have been a loyal apple user for quite some time, this is a major reason why people won't buy the iphone, I will be telling all my friends not to buy it as many mobile phone users utilise the bluetooth to send pics etc to each other.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?this blows, even on the 3g iphone.. the only bluetooth services are headset related, and it doesn't even have a2dp profile, so no stereo headsets.... so pretty much useless.
I’m dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?Bluetooth support on the iPhone is very immature. I'd be pleased to see Apple make some improvements - particularly in syncing. Or automatic syncing via wifi if not.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I think Apple have gone this route as they are determined to keep the iPhone as secure as they possibly can.
once you give people the option to lay their phones wide open by say allowing a phone to be "Always visible and connectable" as many other phones do, then you're asking for the onslaught of phone viruses and trojans
All iPhones are supplied with a docking cable which is how the syncing happens
works fine for me as I tend to be next to my computer with my phone when I want to sync and using bluetooth would only offer another distance of 10 feet or so away - for whatever practical use that can be??!!

Most of the time my iPhone is near to a power socket, but that doesn't mean there's no use in supporting battery power! -
that's a poor analogy
to take that analogy and make it relevent to complaints re wireless syncing it would be more apposite to say that even though you're always near a power socket when you want to recharge the battery - you wish you could do it wirelessly from up to 10 feet away -
and funnily, enough, this reminds that when syncing via dock/cable you are also recharging battery - which is what you're gonna have to do anyway - either after or before sycing via bluetooth - if bluetooth syncing was available -
You may not wish to use bluetooth to sync, but thousands do. What we are protesting about is the usual Apple dictatorship of enforcing how, where and when you will do your computing.
Its totally ludicrous to remove the bluetooth functionality almost entirely, 'just in case' someone sends you a virus.
I very frequently used bluetooth on my Nokia to send colleagues business cards, pictures, video clips, sync to my laptop etc. Now the only thing I can do is carry a cable for syncing, but am unable to do any of the other things even with the cable.
The iPhone is a nice shiny toy with a great user interface, but it's twice the size and very limited in functionality compared to my 3 year old Nokia.
BTW, Intel have just invented a wireless battery charging technology - I for one will be first in there and cut up my cables as soon as possible. -
well done Andrew - I hope you and your 3 year Nokia have a great time - don't spend too much time wap-ping though as it can be bad for the eyes.
there have been companies working on wireless trickle charge for some time now - so sadly you are not ahead of the curve on that issue either - so don't go cutting up your cables yet
all the best -
Who uses wap in the 21st century? I've been using 3G and Symbian browsers for years. I never stated I was ahead of the curve, I stated that Intel has announced a commercially viable wireless charging solution. Medical companies have been doing this for years to charge implantible device batteries, but that is not the same technology. Now if only the underlying Apple technology could be induced into the 21st century we'd all be happy. -
Noino, I completly disagree with you. Not having to carry that USB cable in my POCKET is an amazing experience...you should try. As for the viruses, I've never head og an Ericsson getting hacked...have you?
Apple better get its things lined up because that will not fly for very long. -
Ive had my iPhone for about 8 months now and I have gone through 2 usb cables @ $20 a piece. If I could synch using bluetooth, then I wouldn't have to carry the cable around continuously connecting and disconnecting it, causing the conductors to break and short.
I am not expecting the iPhone to completely eliminate the need for cables to recharge etc..., but if other, less sophisticated phones can synch wirelessly, then why can't my shiny new iPhone.
This is my first Apple product, and while I am impressed with the interface, I have been greatly disappointed with the iron grip that Apple attempts to keep on its products.
This is the reason that Microsoft kicked Apple's butt in the Desktop platform war, and it is also why the iPhone will not live up to its potential as well.
If Apple intends on continuing this business practice, then I hope they enjoy the limelight while they have it; because as soon as there is a good competitor to the iPhone allowing less restrictive usage, the iPhone is going to be religated to the yuppie class just like Apple's other trendy products -
Inappropriate?its really sad iphone cannot sync through bluetooth, to prevent ppl from distributing musics they sell online? probably, but sync wise, this shld be supported!!
I’m totally disappointed!!
-
Inappropriate?Ive thought about this, and all the other omissions alot and I think people are expecting too much from a device only in its second iteration (not even that?) from a company immature in the mobile handset industry. Ive think they have done well to get the basics right and it seems they have thought hard about the trade offs between quality battery life, feature set, and UX.
I think Wireless sync of PIM data and media may make an appearence if wireless 802.11n can be accomodated without too much hit on battery life.

I’m happy

OK, I understand your points, but EVERY mobile phone company on the planet apart from Apple has been providing all of these technologies for years. How would it be if Apple started selling a CRT TV set or a AM radio in 2009? Just because they are 'Apple' doesn't mean they can start palming off ancient technology with a shiny interface and expect everyone to buy it just because its Apple's first device in that field!!! -
I dont think its really like that, There is a development cost to everything so they have to balance that out against Project deadlines, Launch dates and all that. buying hardware from suppliers is the easy bit, Im sure the Bluetooth Radio is as up to date as everyone elses, (your CRT analogy) but from my frustrating experience the problem is being able to develop the software and all the impact it has on the rest of the system.
No one is going to give Apple anything, Mobile handset business is cut throat, they will have to figure things out themselves, or buy in solutions (which then have to be compatible with the rest of the system). they probably thought spending money on the Text input was money better spent, for example. But Im only guessing here.
As a side note-
Im still getting used to no MMS- I used to love sending pics to friends. I think the Thinking behind apple's choice is, that it isnt the future- MMS is a terrible tech, everyone will be on the web soonemailing and facebooking pics instead.
Remember when Apple stopped supplying floppy drives? -
Inappropriate? So long as AT&T and Apple have an exclusive deal their not going to unlock the other tools of Bluetooth. If they did we could connect our iphones to our laptops and get an internet connection anywhere. I was able to do it with my blackberry. This way AT&T can get people to buy their extra PC card internet service.
-
Inappropriate?I'm really amazed that the bluetooth support is non existent for iPhone. C'mon Apple. Should I switch back to my old Nokia to get into internet on the road with my Macbook?
I’m really frustrated
-
Inappropriate?T_Mikael, there are some strong rumors that Apple and AT&T are working on an official solution to "tether" your iPhone to any computer (use it as an external modem) and that we may see it as soon as the Macworld Expo on January 6, 2009.
-
Inappropriate?I Was pretty stunned that syncing /w bluetooth did not work. I will watch the forthcoming keynote to see if this rumour proves true.
Kind regards, tomasio
I’m amused

Inappropriate?Having just wsted an hour screwing around with every bluetooth setting I can find (not many!) and presuming there is a problem with the bluetooth on my new Macbook Pro (on its 2nd motherboard) I gave up trying to synch my wife's iPhone and backup 1 yr of data... Now I read this... It was so inconceivable to me that synch was NOT available on Bluetooth that it never even occurred to me to look! What an incredible omission! Especially given that ALL iTunes (itself a counter-intuitive interface for a mobile phone) documentation on any subject concerning iPhones starts:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer (make sure the iPhone has been activated).
and no where can be found an explanation of how to accomplish this (presumably starting with the sentence 'Plug your USB cable into the iPhone...)
Grr.....
I’m hacked off
-
Inappropriate?wow, Apple is just loosing it. I spend lots of $ and a contract with ATT which is NOT a good deal but now I find out what useless bluetooth comes with the iPhone. Shame on Apple! If they keep it up like this, ie. doing as they please with their loyal customers, I know they will become the next Microsoft: Hated by all. I think that using bluetooth to exchange files and internet sharing with the computer is the MINIMUM apple should offer with the iPhone for which we are playing hundreds of dollars; a lot more than an equivalent product from other companies. I have been using Apple products since the late 80's and honestly, I see greed invading Apple. Keep it up Apple, see how much longer you can get away with it.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?iphone with no BT sync ......."Dang Apple" man most of all MS devices sync via BT....You guys need to just release this update now this is crazy, the best phone out there and no BT sync. The Google device does it. Apple today the new devices offer the same stuff as the iphone come on..........Apple
I’m confused
