The speaker on my iPhone just stopped working suddenly!
Don't know why, but it sucks. This is the handset speaker, when it's next to my ear -- the regular speaker, for playing music aloud, still works, and so do my headphones when I just plug them in.
Do I need to return this thing to Apple, or is there an easier fix?

Inappropriate?There is an easier fix!
You can fix it by plugging in the headphones, starting some music playing on the iPod, and then unplugging the headphones. The iPhone *should* automatically pause the music. If not, try plugging and unplugging the headphones until the music pauses.
By now, the iPhone should have realized you took out the headphones and, hooray! The earpiece and microphone should work again.
I’m glad I don't have to wait for the Genius Bar on this one

Inappropriate?I had the same problem and after a while it just started working again. After reading Cameron's reply I'm betting that plugging and unplugging the headphones a few times was the actual fix.
I've taken to cleaning the headphone jack and the bottom connector by blowing in them every couple of days, which has brought up fond memories of blowing the the cartridges of my original Nintendo.
I’m happy
