uneven RAM in two bays.
can i put 2GB of RAM in one bay and 1GB of ram in the other bay and still have better performance than 1GB of ram in each side

Inappropriate?Well, the reason why Apple does not recommend the 2-1 setup for memory is because the dual channel is lost. However, on a portable mac the dual channel is really a minimal thing. You will see a better improvement if you have more memory than trying to keep the dual channel. By the way depending on the year of your MacBook you can add more memory than what the Apple "paper specs" allow you to... My MBP has 2 sticks of 2GB RAM, that gives me the dual channel performance but the MBP only uses 3.2GB of RAM out of the 4GB due to the chipset.
I have nothing to worry and nothing to lose especially since the RAM prices are pretty low nowadays...
