What is the best way to protect newer laptop models from physical damage?
My Powerbook just died completely. I was going to get it upgraded, but now I'm just going to buy a new one. Unfortunately, the Powerbooks aren't made anymore, apparently, and the repair shop told me that the newer laptop models are not as hardy as the Powerbooks; many more of them come in with logic board problems and broken screens.
Is there a currentl Mac laptop model that is "hardy"? If not, are there some accessories I can buy (other than the support plan!) that can help the Mac to withstand the bumps and bruises it is sure to get over the next 3 years (I know myself!!)

Inappropriate?mmm... I have dropped my MacBook Pro on the floor 3 times and it still looks like new and nothing has happened to it at least everything still works fine...
The problems your repair shop has told you about are only the extreme cases. Not because they get 5 people with a broken screen it means the same may happen to you.
I have stabbed my MacBook Pro screen with a screw Driver (don't ask me how or why)and it did not break, sure there is a scratch (thankfully is at the bottom) but it doesn't make it any different that any other MacBook or PowerBook.
Trust me my PowerBook looked worst after a year than what my MacBook Pro looks like now (2 years+)
The things you can get if you want are:
A good MacBook Pro case. Like the Python:

A good screen protector such as the one from Macally:
(works in the MacBook pro)

Of course get the APP from Apple that's a must...
Get yourself a decent Surge protector or UPS unit like an APC:
http://www.apc.com/
That's about it...

Inappropriate?Thank you for the suggestions. i do have a keyboard cover/screen protector (my Powerbook's keys were so worn you could barely distinguish the letters), and I have a laptop bag and surge protector. I guess I have all the basics! I'm glad you have evidence of the MacBook being hardier than the PowerBook.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? If you have a MacBook (not the Pro), If you drop it just be careful and make sure you check it well, a friend of mine dropped it on its corner and broke off an internal piece of the metal harness (replaceable) and also took some pressure to get the corner back together but the Mac survived and worked fine...
