Inappropriate?I just found this little gadget. Here's another one that's got a smaller, simpler form factor.
But I imagine that if it's ok to wrap your headphone cord around these it's probably ok to wrap it around your shuffle. Although the nice part about these gadgets is they protect the ear buds.
Hope this is helpful!

Inappropriate?Actually, this product that Amy mentioned illustrates the ideal loop for the earbud cable:

Inappropriate? My Sony MDR-EX81P in-ear headphones (which rock btw and only cost $30 @ Amazon) come with a surprisingly simple, quick, and useful wind-up travel case.

Inappropriate? There are loads of products that you can use to wrap your headphones around - you can always use headphones that have cases made for that.
On the other hand, some audio geeks will tell you that cables should not be wrapped around anything tight and should preferably be wrapped very loose or not wrapped around anything at all.
Me, whenever I'm storing my headphones I just stuff them wherever they need to go.

Inappropriate?Yeah, I've seen people go so far as doing gaffer style cross wrapping, spinning it as they wrap it. Speaking of gaffers, I've also heard of adding a little white gaffer tape to the ends of apple cords to reinforce them a bit:
