Inappropriate?Because of the Codecs involved. However, if you have a Mac, try http://perian.org/
Perian, the swiss army knife for quicktime, which adds more file support, though not WMV I think. -
Sorry, I know why technically. My point, not very well put though, was why did Apple not design Quicktime such that it can play the most common video standards? Is it a) technically impossible, b) some strange strategic decision, if so, why or c) incompetence i.e. an inability to think through clearly what users will be looking to use the application for. -
Inappropriate?Quick Time CAN play AVI movies, as to why Apple does not include the codecs with QT: Mainly because Apple follows industry standard procedures and includes all the codecs needed for normal video viewing. Codecs such as AVC1/WMV/WMA (all proprietary Microsoft codecs) & DivX (a DivX networks codec) are not standard and do require other 3rd party files for support. This is why they are not included in QT. However, if you look around other 3rd parties do have plugins and codecs available for QT.

Inappropriate? Not really good enough from Apple. .avi is a basic need as is playing wmv files. Apple is out of the box as long as ......... - this is not what I expect from apple. now I have to wander around looking for some plugin that will do what I want. Apple's software in general leaves a lot to be desired. the fact for instance that imovie won't deal with .avi is another problem.
