Why can't my MacBook Pro support my Apple Cinema Display?
I have just recently bought a MacBook Pro and in the office I use it with my 20" Cinema Display. Unfortunately the sharpness that I experienced when I used my display with my old Sony notebook, has given way to a more fuzzy appearance. I have obviously set the display to the best possible setting, but still the results are far from what I had expected.

Inappropriate?Sounds like you may be using an analog cable instead of a digital cable. Make sure you are using a DVI-D cable between computer and display, and not a VGA cable (e.g. connected using a DVI to VGA adapter) nor a DVI-A cable (which is an analog, not a digital, cable). Using a digital DVI-D cable will give you the sharpest picture possible.
MyCableMart is a good place to buy cables, IMO. Here is some info on the DVI standard, and pictures of the various DVI cable connectors. -
That's a good one too... The quality of the DVI / VGA cable is also important. However, as far as I remember the Cinema Display has a build in DVI cable. which means that if the wire is going bad, a new one may be needed (they are not cheap and they have to be bought from Apple). -
Hi Guys, sorry about not following up on this, but have been travelling... anyway, the cables are good and definitely using DVI. I think that it more a resolution or driver issue. I've tried checking the Nvidia page for driver updates by they are not available for OSX!!! Hooked the Cinema display back on to my old Sony laptop and it works perfectly. Clear - Sharp fonts without a hint of fuzzines... still trying to check with apple what the issue is - without success... cheers -
If your problem is just the fonts, have you tried going to " system pref > Appearance " and adjust the font smoothing style? -
Inappropriate? You macbook pro is still putting out video for the laptop display and its being stretched for the cinema. Shut the lid of your MBP, then wake it up while shut by using the keyboard or mouse. (If bluetooth you need to set the preferences to allow bluetooth wake up) It will wake up using the proper resolution for the attached cinema display. then you're good to go!

Thnx! This is exactly the solution that I was after. even the guys at apple couldn't help me on this... Cheers, Jimi -
Inappropriate?Apple and Microsoft fonts look very different. Apple attempts to make their fonts look very close to print quality and they do look 'fuzzier'. I much prefer Apple's fonting tech, but you may be picking up on the 'fuzzier' quality as a degradation.
If you haven't been aorund Macs very long get an old timer to look at your display and have him give you an opinion. If they're 'good', you might just have to get used to it.
