Why doesn't the iPhone use a standard portable SIM card?
I thought the whole idea of SIM cards was that they enabled people to use any SIM-based phone with a any compatible card. I have two phones and would like to switch between them if necessary. But I can't. I want to transfer the contacts on my old phone to the new one via the SIM card. But I can't.

Ive heard rumors that one of the reasons is because of Visual Voicemail. As other carriers have not made the necessary changes to their networks to support it, nor does any other phone have the capability to use visual voicemail, they restrict the SIMs to just the iPhones.
Like I said, rumors, but my brain says it is logical. It also sounds like a good excuse to disguise greed.

Inappropriate?A friend of mine was complaining about this: He used to be able to swap the SIM between his Treo and his small cram-in-pocket "weekend phone." No go with the iPhone.

Inappropriate?Strictly speaking, you can remove the SIM card and replace it with another one by prying it out with a paper clip or something similar. Only problem is that the phone won't work. That is, unless you've unlocked it with your super duper crack key.

Inappropriate? You can remove your SIM with a paper clip and use it with your other phone, no problem. It sounds like your issue is that the iPhone does not save contacts to the SIM like older phones you are used to. Use an online service instead:

If Google does not support your other phone, there are lots of competing services out there.
