Why the recessed iphone headphone jack?
I just discovered the iPhone's headphone jack is set into the frame of the iPhone so you can ONLY use Apple's headphones or an adapter.
This may be old news, but WTF? I already have good headphones and now I'd have to use an ADAPTER?? Why would I want to use Apple's crappy headphones anyway (other than the built in mic)?
Does this mean other headphones makers out there may end up making their headphones iPhone compliant?
Anyway, just a rant...

Inappropriate? It's a good question with a typically Apple answer. According to Apple's Marketing VP Greg Joswiak the headphone jack decision was driven by design purity. They didn't want to compromise the thinness of the casing.

Also, you can find an adapter for under $10.

Design purity? I think Apple stands behind this illusion all the time but in fact it is the typical proprietary stance Apple takes ... sure, you can carve the plastic off but your cool factor drops to zero and Jobs knows this. He is a marketing genius to play to his brands success -- he knows people will fork over the extra $10 or whatever to keep their illusion whole. -
Also, they fixed this problem in the iPhone 3G. So much for design purity! -
Inappropriate?I just used a razor to carve down all my headphone plugs. It is functional but ugly, which is my revenge at Apple for making something nice looking but non-functional.

Inappropriate?Apple has not officially commented on the reasons for this design decision. Good design is part of their core competency, and they have better things to do than to provide design manuals for their competition. (But it would have been nice if they had not been so dumbass as to claim "it is compatible with most portable stereo headphones".)
The recessed jack has been controversial, but there are (at least) two good reasons for their decision:
Firstly, the rounded edge. It's an excellent touch (it's simply nice to hold or pocket), and it is also structurally sound (makes the device more rigid). But there is no way to have a non-recessed 3.5mm jack on a round edge. So if you want to maintain design consistency, you need to recess the jack. And if you're going to recess it a little, you might as well recess it a lot. This is the "design purity" aspect that the marketing VP was alluding to.
But, secondly, and more importantly, durability. The biggest source of structural failures in portable devices (laptops, phones, etc) is the power connector and the headphone jack. In a small audio device, the headphone is the worst, since, by necessity, the connector will sit on the edge of a small (and thin) circuit board. By making the jack deeply recessed inside the aluminum (rounded) edge, the connection becomes dramatically more resilient. You can see the details of this if you look closely at the high precision with which the included headphone connector slips into the recessed hole (no coincidence), as well as how carefully that hole is centered on the aluminum frame. (As for power and laptops, of course, Apple has already rolled out the MagSafe solution .)
I’m loving this device

Inappropriate? The real question is, why do so many headphone plugs have such large hunks of plastic around them. If they were better designed, they might just fit in. But yeah, it is sort of annoying. The should have at least included an adapter.

Inappropriate? There might be more to it yet. The connection plug for the earphones that come with the iPhone is different from the plug for most headphones. Take a look. The iPhone earphone jack has an extra notch on it. The iPhone earphone includes a microphone on it as well, so thats one extra connection thats included on the plug. Perhaps regular headphones would not not work with the jack even if they fit?

Inappropriate? On Some headphones, there are 3 Rings instead of 2. The Third is used to Transfer Data between the device and the headphones. The iPhone has these kinds of headphone, but there are adapters. They're pretty clunky, though.
