Can't add anything to my profile site barring my name.

i joined just recently and am trying to set up a profile site before i do too much. when i am trying to set it up and put in summary information and such there is a up and down grey bar arrow that appears near the very left of the screen and in the small space that remains to the left of that is the only place it will allow me to type. also, when i click to add stills the screen lightens drastically and there is no prompt to download anything.
