I love my Asus Eee PC 900 with a Linux operating system, but there are three problems I haven't been able to resolve
Here are the problems:
1) According to Asus customer service, I can't install any new applications on this laptop. Of course, if I were a Linux programmer, I'd be able to do it anyway, but I'm not.
2) The Asus laptop does not have a port for a phone cable, so I can't go online using a dial-up service. If there were a USB modem that was compatible with the Asus Linux laptop, I'd be able to do it, but according to Asus customer service, there isn't.
3) What I really want to install is a driver for my Sierra 881 USB connector, so that I can use my Asus laptop to go online with the AT&T mobile broadband service to which I subscribe. (Of course, if I were a Linux programmer, I'd be able to do it. See above.) Thus, my only connectivity choices are ethernet and wifi, and I therefore have to count on the kindness and compatibility of other people's networks when I'm away from my home base.

Inappropriate?1) Thats WRONG install apps using synaptic package manager. its so easy a cave man could do it.
if you want more flexibility go into full desktop mode
go here to find out more http://wiki.eeeuser.com/#software
2)There are plenty of usb dialup devices that work use google
and you DONT have to be a "programmer" for them to work
heres one with a quick google search that should work "out of the box"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...
I checked its on the linux hardware compatability list
3) The Sierra 881 usb works but is difficult to get up and running there are alot of rather long howtos you can find them with a google search.
But id use one of these http://tinyurl.com/aqssbl (since you are looking for dead simple ease of use)
There are other manufacturers that make similar devices as well that was one of the first i came across.
I find it hard to believe asus customer support said any of those things........ make your own conclusions folks............
As a side note i dont even own an asus eeepc this information took me about 5 minutes to look up.
I’m amused

This was my first post to Get Satisfaction, and I now see that this is the wrong web site for me. I am too much of wimp to benefit from responses of this kind. I am a delicate flower, I guess, and it hurts my feelings to have a stranger respond in these terms. However, I do recognize that he or she is trying to be helpful, and I do think the concept of Get Satisfaction is wonderful. Nevertheless, I will not be back. -
Inappropriate? My response was meant to be helpful. But some of the things posted seemed like fud to me. Anyone else think so too??? Anyway it wasnt meant to be condescending. As as a member of the linux community i feel i have to respond to some of these posts sternly because some people are legitimately just out to discredit linux. I am here to help people as well in some cases to be helped. If my response was not helpful i am sorry to hear that.
-
A helpful response would have been for you to address the "difficult to get up and running" problem. A sincere apology would have addressed your abusive language, not "sorry to hear that" which, in fact, is a non-apology. -
You feel you have to respond sternly? Who put you in charge? And nowhere do I get the tone she was discrediting Linux. If you're here to help, be nice about it. We don't need more rude comments. You do sound condescending, whether the intent was there or not. And I've had, as well as everyone, a rude CSR, there's one in every company. I've had an HP rep tell me they don't care, and that was on a Lockheed to HP transaction. So now I hate HP. I'm just saying, be nice, or don't answer rudely. -
Inappropriate?Woah.
@viamptor, Deb is part of the linux community, too. Saying things like "its so easy a cave man could do it" and "I find it hard to believe asus customer support said any of those things........ make your own conclusions folks............" are not encouraging or supportive. I bet if you'd punctuated your comments and offered a bit more explanation you coulda been really helpful to Deb.
For instance, to item 1, a more helpful response might have been "woah! Asus customer service really said that to you? They're completely wrong. Not only can you install new software on your Eee PC, it is so easy that a caveman could do it (if that caveman knew Synaptic syntax ...) Check out this URL. I know that sometimes command line install tools are intimidating but it is really not hard. Promise."
See how much more supportive that sounds? Makes it clear that it is Asus customer service that is wrong, honors her anxiety about command line tools, and points her in the right direction (towards a workable solution).
As a member of the Linux community myself, I'd really like to see novices treated with much more respect and trust when they are first finding their bearings. Even if she was just trolling, setting her straight in a way that helps the next reader is easy enough.
PS. I'm underwhelmed by this site myself. Let me compose whole comment and then tell my I'll have to log in? -
Inappropriate?Dear Sir or Madam,
Fortunately, I do not come from a culture that requires me to treat the implication that I am lying as a killing insult.
In fact, I am candidly reporting actual exchanges with Asus customer support and actual problems with my Eee PC.
In general, I am very pleased with my Asus Eee PC 900, and happy to speak in support of FLOSS.
However, I am am not at all pleased with your tone in addressing me, and request that you refrain from responding to my posts, if you cannot avoid expressing your contempt for me. I hope that you can savor the experience of pitying a stranger's ignorance and despising her in private, without adding hurtful words to a public form.
Sincerely yours,

Inappropriate?Text isnt the best way to communicate (maybe theyll allow for audio/video in the future??) The way it reads to me can and HAS been interpreted differently than it was meant to be..
Matt (heh thats my name too) no apology was necessary really my language was not abusive.
"so easy a cave man can do it " was just to let the op know it was extremely easy to use to put her at ease. (see also "dead simple ease of use)
And i still DO find it hard to believe asus tech said that.. It wasnt intened to make the op seem like a liar (if i had thought they were I WOULD JUST SAY SO) Should be read. as amanda posted above ......
.
Amanda "Even if she was just trolling, setting her straight in a way that helps the next reader is easy enough" I will take that advice thank you. PS (synaptic is a gui front end for apt :P)
Deborah...... the one thing in my entire post that was inappropriate (not "abusive" or "contemptful") imho was "this information took me about 5 minutes to look up" And i do apologize for that.....
I’m confident

Inappropriate?@viamptor wow man. You're going to make people not come back with comments like that. I don't have an ASUS, but have had 2 linux laptops (I manually installed) and they are in no way "so easy a caveman could do it". I have had problems with WiFi, screen brightness, USB device compatibility and so much more. I had to go into the Terminal and do a lot of changes with sudo commands and editing with pico. This isn't "easy". Oh, and that's versions of Ubuntu 6.x-8
Also, I don't believe all flavors of linux have a package manager. Maybe you are just used to flavors like Ubuntu? Whatever the case, I know HP Mini 1000 linux version has it's own homebrew linux and it's pretty restrictive to say the least. Plus if I knew nothing about Linux, which at one time I didn't, I didn't know what to even search for when searching.
just try to be more polite! I mean, someone is crossing over to Linux! That's awesome!

For your next laptop you might want to give Linux Mint a go. Haven't gotten to try out the wifi as the laptop I tried it on wouldn't work wired or wireless with either Windows or Linux (hardware troubles).
The rest is about as easy as it can possibly get. PCLinuxOS is also a really good distro for easy set up.
For most people, even the guys who like to play around with the internals, an easy set up at the start is still a really good thing and those two are the easiest I've come across. -
Inappropriate?Oscar the comment had nothing to do with linux as a whole but todo with synaptic in general.
Ive used just about every linux distro you can think of even before "distros"
most modern distros have some for of package manager be it rpm =yum dpkg =apt portage even slack has basic tgz packaging system.
The hp mini has IS ubuntu and has apt under the hood..... Thanks to your post i just found out about the elegant interface built ontop of it. Im going to install it on a usb stick and try it out
thanks
I’m thankful
