I want it to also. I mean let's face it, the people that like twitter and this kind of junk are geeks infatuated with numbers/stats... so we want to know the amount of new tweets in the dock. I mean, I'm a geek. Help me out! Plus it seems to be "standard convention" to do this (omnifocus, iChat, mail, etc). The proof of that is US writing in saying it's broken... :o)
PS: Your program is continually blowing me away regardless of this desire.
