Make auto-shortening of URLs an option rather than a requirement.
I like to be able to post full URLs on occasion without using a shortening service. Tweetie seems to insist that I shorten it.

Inappropriate?Hmmm...now I'm not so sure. User error, perhaps.

Inappropriate?Happened to me, too. I *never* want to shorten URLs, because I hate URL shortening services.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? Why shorten a URL when it fits? It just obfuscates the destination. We only want that because we HAVE to when it won't fit.
Thanks.
I’m unconcerned

Inappropriate?URL shortening is bad for consumers of the links. Sometimes it's necessary, but when it's clearly not (for example, a 50 character tweet with a 15 character URL), obfuscating with bit.ly is just frustrating. No UI is needed, simply logic that only shortens URLs when necessary.

Inappropriate? We never shorten a URL with out explicit user action (command option s).
But Twitter will shorten it using bit.ly if your URL is over 30 or so characters.
The company thinks
this is one of the best points

You could provide some UI to let users know this is going to happen (mark the URL as red instead of blue perhaps?).
When you provide an auto-shortening command, and a user's URL gets auto-shortened, it's only natural to assume your software was the one that did it. -
Inappropriate?I've found that it shortens no matter what (must be usually >30 chars?), and it drives me mad. Why force shortening for 30 characters? Shortening services break the design of the Internet, the ability to go to old links (since they expire), etc. Please let us choose when to do this, especially since I get no user feedback that its going to happen.

Like I said right above, we're not shortening it unless you press command option s. But Twitter will shorten any URL longer than 30 characters.
