The problem here is that not one of you knows how push notifications work. To enable push notifications, there is an ONGOING cost to the developer. They have to setup, run, and maintain a server that checks for new updates through the Twitter APIs, and then sends a push notification through to Apple. Technically speaking, this would be a very messy thing to code unless it's done on Twitters end. That's not to say it isn't possible (because it is), but it doesn't seem to be in the spirit of which Loren likes to develop (see his reasons for not doing groups).
I feel this needs to be repeated so people will actually understand. This is an ONGOING cost to the developer. You paid for the app once, but to enable push notifications, Loren would have to keep paying every single month to run a server. That means every single month his profit margin gets smaller and smaller.
It appears as though some developers have accepted this. However, you cannot blame someone if they do not want to do something that causes them to decrease their profit margins.
Ignoring the technical problems, and purely concentrating on the financial aspect, the only effective way to do it would be to charge his users a monthly fee to enable push. However, everyone would just whine about having to pay for something a different (inferior) app does for free.
It basically comes down to this. If you are willing to use an inferior application to get free push notifications, then do it! If you are like me, and would prefer to have the superior application, then accept that push notifications (at the moment) are not going to happen.

Tweetie, can we please get push notifactions on the next app update?

I think its quite clear from Erica Sudan over at Arstechnica that this is technically possible without requiring anything from Twitter's end. It only supports @replies. But thats all I think anyone would want push notifications for. Getting a push notification for every single tweet would be ridiculous.

So pelase Atebits enable this for Tweetie for iPhone 3.0.

Inappropriate? This topic was discussed in the forums as well, and the general outcome of the discussion was that unless twitter *wants* to do it, there's nothing the clients/apps can do about it.
It's twitter who needs to do the dirty work.

No,its wrong many other Twitter Apps are supporting Push notifications. It is not Twitter need to work,it is Lorren Bitcher. -

Inappropriate?Yep, this doesn't have anything to do with the dev... if the mothership (therefore Twitter) can afford to do that, they'll give the OK to developpers, otherwise it won't be possible. + The API limit of 100 requests per hour lets me think that it's not gonna happen any time soon. sad.
I’m sad

It should be possible. The Mac version does notifications as well. To query Twitter every 5 or 10 minutes should be enough for most users. -
Inappropriate?Even if Twitter doesn_t support Push on their side, one could configure tweetie to check regularily for updates (like on mac) and push them to the iphone. for regular updates a badge showing unread items should be sufficient. Notifications only for DMs and stuff..
Would be nice and really make a difference.

Check out the iPhone app "Prowl" (uses Growl) for this type of functionality. I use it, and it's great. -
I've been using Prowl since the week it was released, and it's usefulness extends far, far beyond Twitter notifications via Tweetie/Growl. I've integrated it with my Lightwave and After Effects rendering workflows, among other applications and events. It's essentially an extensible platform for push notifications on the desktop. Highly recommended!
That said, Twitter notifications via Prowl are lower on my list of favourite things - not only does it do you little good, since it won't open up a Twitter client on the phone, but Tweetie must be running at all times to publish the updates. For desktop notifications, Prowl can't be beat, but for Twitter... I'm switching over to TwitterFon (which is adding native Push notifications in the next month or two, and is faster than Tweetie on the iPhone, not to mention caching and automatic @+DM loading - both long standing requests of mine for Tweetie). -
There is a version of Prowl pending App Store approval that will allow you to choose the app that opens upon receiving Prowl Push notifications (among other features).
Since you already seem to be using Prowl for other desktop apps, not sure why it's a problem to push Tweetie notifications as well.
I too use Prowl for more than Twitter notices. And interesting on TwitterFon, will have to check it out. Seems like development on Tweetie—both iPhone and Mac—has been at a standstill for months. I never see any updates here anymore on any of the long-standing issues/requests for either app, and no updates via the developer's blog or Twitter account.
I really dig both versions of Tweetie, but they need some attention.
edit: wow, just checked out TwitterFon Pro and the feature set blows Tweetie away (right now). Seriously thinking about switching now. Flickr support and in-app email etc. is something I have been wanting to see in a Tweetie updates for months now. -
Prowl is not an option for Windows users. I am also thinking about switching back to another Twitter client on the iPhone now. Haven't seen a lot of dev on Tweetie but the other clients do get it. Seems like it was a one-shot to me. Too bad. -
Good point Pierre. There are Windows equivalents to Growl: http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/de... but not sure if Prowl will work with it (thinking probably not).
Hopefully Tweetie will see some attention soon. It's getting long in the tooth, both apps. -
Inappropriate?Yeah I would only want Push notices for @ & DM tweets. And it would be *excellent* to have them! ;)
-
Inappropriate?Couldn't we at least set the option to have our Desktop app as the server for push? Wouldn't that be technically possible?
-
I was under the impression the Push notices were all handled by Apple's servers. -
Not possible. If you read Apple's documentation for APNs, it's pretty clear that you need a dedicated server that will maintain a persistent connection with the APNs server. Letting random desktop clients connect to APNs would make it unreliable, which is something Apple would never do. -
Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure how it all worked. -
If you look at Mobile Colloquy's push bouncer implementation, an enabled bouncer pushes to the Mobile Colloquy push server, which in turn sends it into APNS. It's a brilliant solutions that could work in this case. -
Inappropriate?I wonder how IM+ got round the impossibilities?

They didn't "get around it". They followed the documented procedures and have a central server that sends the push notifications to APNs. -
Inappropriate?I'd love to get notifications for my DMs, at least! @replies would be nice (as badges at the most) but getting alerts for DMs would be really useful!

Inappropriate? It doesnt work great :S Sometimes its wonderful, sometimes i get the push two hours after ive been in to check tweetie manually and have already read everything.
I’m feeling like its a half hearted solution
-
Inappropriate?Simplytweet has push notification of mentions.
-
This is for tweetie, we like tweetie, we don't want simplytweet or whatever other app people suggest. -
Inappropriate?I strongly advise to all those who want Push Notifications to use the App called "Notifications". It works just perfectly. Once set up it opens your preferred Twitter Client directly. (e.g. Tweetie 2)
Notifications can also deliver all Facebook Notifications direct to you!
Go and check it out! Awesome APP! -

Great point. I M always surprised by the inexpensive apps that offer Push. Perhaps it's not as resource-intensive since they Re able to offer these services without subscriptions? Maybe silar to hosting a website?
I'm just curious how these other apps can offer push, if the ongoing costs are prohibitive. I'm not challenging your answer at all, just askingthe question. I'm in the dark about how Push works and what the cost is to a developer for offering it. -
I use a superior application that DOES off push notifications (very reliably too). Its called SimplyTweet. -
Inappropriate?I would highly recommend Prowl (and preyfetcher.com) for adding push notifications to Tweetie. It's a push notification system that can send alerts from a desktop computer (typically via Growl) to your phone. Because Tweetie for Mac has already implemented growl alerts, all you have to do is download the Prowl plugin for Growl, and the Prowl app for your iPhone (and for those interested, it's a one time purchase, no reoccurring fees).
However... what really makes Prowl an awesome solution; it's more a push notification platform than desktop solution, encouraging users to build upon the open API with both desktop and web based services. Preyfetcher.com is a free online service that checks Twitter and publishes a Prowl notification automatically, no computer+Growl needed! And of course, Prowl supports app links, letting you open up Tweetie automatically when a Twitter push notification comes through. Heck, there's even WordPress plugin!
Though I switched to Echofon Pro a while ago, I still use Prowl on a daily basis. Super helpful, regardless of your twitter app of choice.
I’m very happy with Prowl
