Good news: Twitter has fixed this bug
Bad News: They are not going to fix any of the messed up avatars, so you'll have to re-upload to take advantage of the fix.
I’m thankful

Yes, there is a bug in twitter that is causing Twitter to serve Tweetie avatars that are too large (instead of resizing them as they usually do).
Twitterific and other clients may not reject these overly large images, but Tweetie is a bit picky about the image size, as images that are too large can cause instability (eating up ram and drive space).
I’m confident twitter will fix this, eventually.

When it works on every other application, it's flat out dishonest for you to call this a Twitter problem. Fix your app! I paid money for your app and expect it to work at least as well as other apps. -
i had a normal iphone pic i took to use as my avatar, and it was working fine until i changed it there for it is a tweetie bug not twitter. -
Inappropriate?I'm frustrated by the thought that "eventually" could mean months - b/c I use Tweetie every day. My tweeps don't know who I am now, just because I dared to change my avatar!
I’m impatient
-
Inappropriate? How is it a Twitter problem if the other Iphone apps work fine? And how is it a Twitter probem if we use Tweetie2 to change our profile pic, wouldn't a photo taken from an Iphone 3G meet the size limits?
I’m agitated
-
Inappropriate? If the images are less than 200px square, they should get around this bug.
-
Inappropriate? However, that's not Twitter's specified image requirement. It appears that this is Tweetie's image requirement. So it's disingenuous for you to suggest that this is a Twitter issue. It's clearly a Tweetie issue and I would hope that you intend to fix it. Tweetie should be able to handle any image size that the other applications can handle.

The API specifies how small the images ought to be, we are conforming to the API. But you are right, we are rejecting the images if they do not conform to the specified size.
We do this because we want Tweetie to be as fast as it can possibly be. Can you imagine if several users uploaded 10megapixel images as their avatars? It'd cause all the apps that do not reject them to crash constantly. -
My issue is that I can't use Tweetie to update my photo any longer, because somehow it is too big. If Tweetie is aware of its own limitations why can't I select a photo from within my Iphone and Tweetie can resize it before uploading it to the servers? I have NEVER had an iphone twitter app crash because the avatar thumbnails are too large. Ever. -
Inappropriate?Well I use TweetDeck on my home computer and it doesn't crash. I have the TweetDeck iPhone app and it also does not crash. I prefer Tweetie because it has some additional features that I like, but the next update of TweetDeck may also have those. If TweetDeck continues to work, and you are unable to provide that same functionality and reliability at the same time - you lose.
Ultimately - this is not a Twitter problem, it is a Tweetie problem.
I’m annoyed
-
i agree with you michael to settle the matter i think tweetie should just come up with an update for the fix. -
Inappropriate? Why does this size issue suddenly impact my ability to upload a pic from my iphone?

Not actually sure. -

Inappropriate?I resized my avatar photos to 200x200, then 190x190 and they still aren't there. I am now using Birdfeed and Simplytweet and while they aren't perfect at least my avatar shows up and they aren't crashing due to the enermous size of my 200x200px avatar. I think my biggest concern is that @atebits keeps blaming this on Twitter when it is clearly ONLY an issue with Tweetie.
I’m frustrated
-
i think it was a TWITTER problem, NOT a Tweetie problem. I went back in and re-uploaded my photo and in a few mins AFTER restarting Tweetie for Mac, my new profile photo was there. Maybe try redoing your photo avatar. Open your photo program, Photoshop, etc. and then copy the image and past into a new 200x200px document. save that out and upload. Hopefully that solves your problem. -
Inappropriate? In any case, besides mentioning it here (or as some do: whine about it), there is a very simple work-around for the time being: resize your avatar to sub 200x200. It did the trick for me!
I’m happy
-
I suppose I should also resize the avatar of all of ppl I follow who's avatars can't be displayed by Tweetie? That's going to be tricky...
People who expect an application that they purchased to WORK are not whining. -
Inappropriate?Your whining to the wrong person, whine to Twitter not Tweetie. Twitter broke their OWN specification that every one else adheres to (some more than others).
That is the whole point of specifications, agreements, protocols. So people can expect reasonably well what to expect when communicating to any open system.
(not sure if the following is a good example, but I'll give it a try :-)
Say you buy an electric device that conforms to a certain voltage that is in the specification of the local electricity supplier (say it guarantees a constant 110V feed with max spikes to 115V). If the supplier all of a sudden doesn't follow their OWN specification and has a spike to 120V, will you blame the device for not working anymore?
I’m amused
-
I will if every other similar device on the market works just fine even with the "spike". -
Now tell me :-
1. Why ALL other twitter apps for iPhone show my profile image other than Tweetie 2 ????
2. Even after resizing my profile to 200px*200px, it still does not show up ??
Stop blaming on twitter please !!!! It your OWN product which is DEFECT ! -

Yes, I confirm that Tweetie 2 has fixed the problem, now I can see my avatar, Thanks !! -
We didn't do anything! This was a twitter bug! -
Inappropriate?I just added a new avatar in tweetie an hour ago and I'm still getting a blank image.
I’m sad
-
Tweetie also caches avatars for 72 hours, I believe. It should show up in a day or two. Or you can delete an reinstall the app. -
Inappropriate?I just want to thank atebits for their attention to detail in making tweetie the best iPhone Twitter app. It's touches like these that maximize speed and stability, that make tweetie such a joy to use. On behalf of the complaining users who seem to not understand this, I apologize.
-
Inappropriate?I resized my image to 200x200 and deleted tweetie2 from my iPhone. I re-installed tweetie to clear the cache - the problem is still there!
Does it matter if it's jpg bs png? Does Twitter also cache images (can't see why) -
Inappropriate?OK, it looks like there's more than just the Tweetie cache -- after about twelve hours it started working correctly. (200x200 jpg image)
-
Inappropriate?Looks like Twitter will eventually clean up these broke avatars. Hooray!
I’m thankful
