I'm no longer receiving text messages and my call log is randomly erasing
So about a month ago I noticed my call log and text message history were randomly erasing from time to time on my Blackberry Pearl. Then, at the end of last week I noticed I was no longer receiving texts at all. By the beginning of this week my call log was erasing so frequently that I had no way of seeing who my missed calls were from.

Inappropriate?I called AT&T customer service finally. I spent nearly 45 minutes on the phone (about the standard time with them which is why I kept putting off calling) and got shifted to 3 different departments because, AS ALWAYS, the first department I was sent to was the wrong one.
Finally, the rep in Data Devices had me notch down my memory limit in one of my Media Options areas. He said that if too much memory is set aside for media options it can affect the phone's ability to receive texts or save the call log because it's making space for media. I was dubious because I have very little media on my phone (about 7 photos, no music, no video, no extra ringtones) and why would it all of a sudden need more space for the memory settings that have been there since I got my phone 6 months ago? But he insisted this is how they deal with this. So I notched down my "Device Memory Limit" and my "Reserved Pictures Memory" in the Video area. And to be safe I did the same thing with the Music area.
I have to say, so far so good. I did successfully receive a test text message. I'll be keeping a close eye on my call log and text history now and report back if I have the same problem again.
I’m unsure how I feel. The jury's still out.

Inappropriate?I had this SUPER annoying problem too... erased all the extra media stuff and it seemed to fix the problem for about a month until it happened again. Fix to problem has been that I went and got a 2 gig memory chip to put in the phone and changed settings to that all pics, music, etc. is saved to this. So far seems to be working...
Also should note I have the blackberry curve and not the pearl....
Hope that helps. -
Inappropriate?Amy, that's actually one one of the many fixes to the problem.
This is generally the case with the Curve as it has a better camera and less memory so there is a greater chance of the issue popping up. As you use the phone, the device is using memory for applications as well as pictures and other media using space. On the curve you can get information by clicking ALT+SHIFT+H, check the file free, when it is at 0 bytes, your call logs will delete. There's an article in the Blackberry Knowledgebase that explains it as it being by design in the OS to delete when the memory is low.
How to prevent:
-Do the media options setting as you did
-Keep your pictures, music, ringtones, etc on the media card
-Use the Auto On/Off function in the device (Under Options) to have the device turn off overnight for at least 1 hour
-Keep an eye on the file free and if it gets too low, pull the battery out of the device with it on, this is doing a hard reset on the device. Your file free stats should return to normal as long as it's just the applications using the free space.

Inappropriate? Thanks much, hayden! That is super helpful.
I’m grateful and also wondering if you work for either AT&T or RIM?

Inappropriate? All Blackberry Devices with software version 4.2 or later utilize something called Limited Memory Management, meaning, when you go over the 800kb limit on the device, it will start deleting things in the device memory according to importance. It would be best to purchase a memory card if you are going to save pictures and such.Go to www.blackberry.com/support for more info. This is not an at&t issue. It is a Blackberry device issue. When you buy a car and the transmission goes out, do you blame the gas station?

Thanks for the further info, Big Poppa. -
Inappropriate? One thing to do, every so often just pull the battery out give it 30 Seconds and put it back in, maybe once a day if you're a heavy user or just every other day. Another thing you can do is delete unused languages, the blackberry demo video, demo photos, and make sure you save your videos and images on your memory card.. if you don't have a memory card, go invest in one they are running pretty cheap now.

Thanks much! Yeah, I really need to get a memory card... I haven't had the erasing issue lately, but the phone sure doesn't let me keep very many photos on it. -
glad to hear it, like I said though try taking some unused languages, demo video out until you get one :-) (demo video takes up 2.5 MB) -
Great tip. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I have had this problem too. Can someone explain how to delete the unused languages and how to get to Device Memory. I have a Blackberry Pearl 8810
-
i think on the pearl all you have to do is go to options and go to languages and to the device memory i think you press ALT+SHIFT+H
