My DSL line drops several times daily.
I have high-speed DSL service in San Francisco from AT&T. It is, I should mention, not cheap.
My understanding was that I was paying for an always-on service. And yet, I have numerous daily service interruptions, which are usually resolved automatically within a few seconds or minutes. It sounds fussy and impatient, I'm sure, but it interrupts videos and makes browsing a hassle.
The AT&T-supplied router actually makes this problem worse, by substituting its own error messages (which provide misleading and inaccurate information) for the standard web browser error messages.
If this happened once or twice a week, that would be one thing. But it happens several times daily!

Inappropriate? It just happened again! I was watching video of an archived ballgame on MLB.com, and then when the web drops, the stupid webapp doesn't handle it well, and so I need to refresh the page and tediously recue the video.
I’m exasperated
-
Inappropriate?Watching another ballgame, this time live, and it happens again! This is really catastrophically low-quality connectivity. Seriously, it messes something up every single day.
Thanks are due to Get Satisfaction for allowing me to vent when this happens, however.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?And again...
And four minutes later, again. -
Inappropriate? Here is the issue depending on your area, you are either using the telephone line or your using a fiberoptic line. If your using the telephone line that's part of the problem. There is a huge problem with the degridation of the telephone lines which is a good bit of the issue, the other is equipment, apparently your dropping a number of packets or data. I would start by disconnecting the AT&T provided router, hopefully that's not the all in one unit where the modem is built in, if it is then you may want to request the westell modem and use a linksys router. Also you can ask AT&T to provide inline filters or you can purchase them yourself as welll. Also ask them how far are you from the Central Office. If your right at 15,000 to 18,000 then there is nothing you can do about it. Another option would be to ask AT&T to wire a new NID (Network Interface Device) which is that small box on the outside of your home, those do tend to go bad after 10+ years. Hope this helps, i'm on cable even though DSL is much more securer but bandwidth in my area is much more consistent.

Inappropriate?Thanks for your reply.
I'm not sure any of that is the problem. I don't use a landline telephone at all, so filters should not be the issue. The NID is new, I think.
I do have the all-in-one router/modem, though.

Inappropriate?I have had this problem for at least 3 months - probably more, but haven't paid attention. Meanwhile, ATT have checked my lines inside and out outside - thought they'd fixed the problem, but 2 hours later, same thing - works about 5 minutes then quits, I click on the reboot button and enter a password, and about 2 minutes later it's up for another 5minutes. This is insane! Meanwhile, tech service is useless. i asked to speak to a supervisor, we were disconnected and she never called back.
I'm going to get another service, but not sure which one - since I lose the connection so much, I have had a hard time researching it.
Any suggestions are welcome - I'd rather not go through the hassle of changing, but will probably be force to. -
Inappropriate?Just read Mr. Knowitall's reply - will give your suggestions a try. thanks. -p

Inappropriate?(It just happened again! It happens all the time!)
Hey Patricia. I'm sorry to hear that your problem is even worse than mine!
In solidarity,

I’m annoyed

Inappropriate? And it happened again. I'm not even taking the time to document half the times this happens.
This service is so abysmal.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? It happened about ten times today.
-
Wait, now I'm on hold again? WTF? -
Inappropriate? Also, they cold stood me up for service last week. They were supposed to show between 12 and 4. Not even a phone call.
I’m neglected
-
Inappropriate?About to call AT&T again. I'll let you know how it goes.
I’m unjustifiably optimistic
-
Not much of a wait, and fairly professional. The dude said he'd talk to the Line Maintenance guys, and have them get back to me. We'll see. -
They got back to me after about ten minutes! I'm on hold waiting for the technician. -
This hold music version of 'Watermelon Man' totally sucks.
edit: Hilariously, the internet dropped while I was leaving this comment. -
I feel like I'm re-explaining an awful lot. -
A guy is coming tomorrow between 1-5; I'm not sure what we'll learn that we didn't already know... -
I guess he'll bring a new modem, and we can try that. -
I hate to say this, but this guy's accent is a bit of an impediment.
