Can Malicious AntivirusGold 5.1 be removed with AVG Free anti-virus edition?

My computer is hiding a malicious spyware called AntiVirusGold 5.1. If you google it, the first entry tells you how to search your files and manually rid your computer of this invader but I have followed these instructions and it has not found the culprit and it still shows up when I do a spyware scan. That says it cannot be quarantined or removed.

So it is causing me trouble downloading updates. The updating procedure just stalls in the process and AVG will not update.

First, will AVG updates have the solution to AntiVirusGold 5.1 and can you offer any other input?
