font size on tabbar, combobox control, slider and many other controls
There seems to be lack of font controls for many elements (tabbar, accordion and many other). By default the font on many of the controls is bold and rich text formatting does not allow for something to be set to normal size.
I have to edit the .bmml file directly and set false on a tabbar control I am using. Can we get font controls for all these elements as they appear to support them already.
Is there a particular reason why font controls are not there by default?

Inappropriate?Hi hipbaq, the main reason is to try and keep the application as simple as possible to use, which means that I only try to add buttons if it's absolutely necessary. Mockups is not intended for pixel-perfect designs, but rather for the initial brainstorming phase. That's also why you can't change the color of everything, for instance, or why you can't resize some controls both vertically and horizontally.
I’m hoping you'll understand

The default font Mockups set is bold for some of the controls.
IMHO, font weight and size is HIGHLY useful to indicate prominence of specific elements in the mockup. For example in my mockup, boldness of a tab is used to demostrate that settings on it have been set.
I'd suggest that if controls for fonts are not going to be implemented it would be then best to add a "normal font" modifier to rich text editing control. The user can apply formatting on demand them while keeping controls clean. -
Hi hipbaq, I just added support to bold/unbold, italic and underline, as well as font size, to the following control types: Tab Bar, Button Bar, Vertical Tabs. Thanks for pushing me to do the right thing! You can try the pre-release version here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... -
Giacomo. Thank you very much. You mockup tool is really the best.
I made quite a few converts at my company (who bought a few copies of your tool) and Balsamiq mockups are all over the place now. The time saved is counted in days.
I installed and tested the pre-release and there is a bug.
Here are steps to reproduce:
1. Add Tab Bar (or Button Bar or Vertical Tabs) to the Canvas.
The font on the control is bold by default
2. Click on the control to set focus then on property inspector
You will see the "B" of the bold control highlighted.
3. Toggle the "B" (bold control) so its no longer highlighted.
The TabBar font turns normal
3. Remove focus from TabBar by click on the Canvas.
4. Click and set focus to the TabBar.
Now look at the property inspector.
The "B" of bold control is highlighted. -
Yup, I'll fix it, thanks! -
Inappropriate? Can we have that for ComboBoxes, too, please?
We have a fixed screen size that we design for and it is hard to check if a layout fits, if the font size is different in the mockup and in the actual implementation. -
ok, let me take a look -
Hi Stephen, can you please try the new build here? http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mock... - it has the resizeable combobox in it -
Inappropriate?Thanks, works fine for ComboBoxes.
Err, I need this consistently for all controls, most importantly the text fields and text area.
Sorry for not saying that right away. -
Hi Stephen, I don't want to do it for all controls if possible...in fact I already did it reluctantly for comboboxes. I'd like to take a step back and try to understand what your current problem is and what you're trying to achieve. Mockups is not intended for pixel-perfect design and the mockup size shouldn't really matter...can you please tell me more about your situation? -
Well, we have to design our pages for a minimum/default screen size of 1024*768px. Font size is required to be 11px (with very few exceptions for special elements).
When arranging elements/controls I have to take available space into account.
Just now I had a page where I was unsure if I can visually group related elements on a single page without diminishing usability or whether I need to have separate tabs.
I have changed the font size of all elements (that allow it) to 11px and it seems, that there is enough room to layout the controls, but I am still not sure because the text fields are still using a larger font. -
Ok Stephen, fair enough. Version 1.5 just shipped which adds text size support for many controls. Would you mind sending me a list of the other control types that require it for you? -
Hi there, I just added text size controls to text input and text area. It will go live on Sunday -
Inappropriate?Hi there, the new changes are live: http://www.balsamiq.com/blog/?p=957 - let me know if there are still some controls that do not support text size the way you'd like.
