Import Image From File Design
This is a follow-up topic to the "Help me design the "import image" feature" topic here: http://getsatisfaction.com/balsamiq/t...
I have started implementing the feature and, now that I have played with it some, I have some doubts on the design of the "import image from a file" panel of the dialog.
Here's what I have implemented right now, based on the mockup:
I have noticed though that although the design saves a click or two in some cases (see Michael Matti's comment here: http://getsatisfaction.com/balsamiq/t... ), I think I like the idea of a simple "Browse..." button which opens the default "Browse" dialog provided by the operating system instead.
Here's an example:
First of all, it's a familiar interface for everyone, nothing new to learn. Also, notice all the things I can do here:
All this goodness is well worth an additional click don't you think?
Thoughts?

First of all, it's a familiar interface for everyone, nothing new to learn. Also, notice all the things I can do here:
- I can select across devices and shared disks,
- I can see proper file icons
- I can still see a preview
- I can sort files by "date modified" (I do this a lot lately)
- I can search
All this goodness is well worth an additional click don't you think?

Inappropriate?Definitely agree with this, and I assume the PC version will have its familiar modal also. I often use the side icons (desktop, etc.) to start navigating from, and like being able to search like I would in Photoshop. This makes perfect sense to me!
I’m thrilled!

Yes, on Windows (and Linux!) this approach will show the familiar "open file" modal as well. Glad you are thrilled, I am too! :) -
Not thrilled with Vista, but we'll live... =) -
Inappropriate?Ok, thanks everyone. New design implemented, though not 100% done:

Clicking on the file name or the browse button will open the standard "Open" dialog box.
I’m thankful and excited about this feature

Inappropriate?Just noticed your tweet to me.. I agree with everyone that the standard OS browse method is best.. so am happy to see thats the way you went.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Hi everyone. I have been working on this, and while I haven't fully finished the feature, I wanted to give you a chance to test what I have so far, since you've been wating so long!
You can download the "prerelease" version here:

Only the "File" and "Web" panels work, I still have to finish the Flickr panel and the attachment panel for the Confluence and JIRA versions.
I'll keep publishing updates at that location as I work, so check back there once in a while...
As always, I welcome all feedback and bug reports on these forums (maybe we should start new topics about them, as this one is pretty long...)
I’m thankful and excited!
