Line breaks in data grid and text wrapping
I would like to specify a line break in tables and any text field. I have tried inserting my own "\n" or "\r" but that does not seem to work. Here is an example of what I am trying to do...
I also want to do this with other text widgets like the radio button or check box. I would expect to be able to shorten the width and have the component wrap the text to the next line.

Inappropriate? That's a good point, let me take a look. I have a feeling this won't be easy to implement.
-
Inappropriate?Any progress on this one? Should be easy to do (IMHO).
-
Inappropriate?Hi Michael. No progress on this so far, I'm batching all DataGrid improvements together. This will not be easy to implement because of how bad Flash is at telling me the height of a multi-line text field. Also, I know that a variable-row-size grid is very hard to implement (at least in Flex), so I fear that allowing designers to mock it up in Mockups might give them the impression that it would be easy to implement. Anyone knows if this is only a concern for Flash or for other languages as well?

Inappropriate?Hello,
I'd really like to see line break as well! I was hoping Control-Enter would do it.
I’m bugged, but OK about it!
-
Inappropriate?I'd be happy enough if I could achieve this (syntax-wise) via something as simple as:
First line\nSecond line, Next field
So the "\n" would be interpreted as a new line. Creating multi-line tables/data grids in any language that outputs HTML is easy, and they're a very common part of most web-apps, so this would be great to be able to show in a mockup. I'm manually creating a DataGrid right now to get around it.
Another related feature would be some way of indicating "colspan" (in HTML-lingo). Perhaps something like this?
First Column, Second Column, Third Column, Fourth Column, Fifth Column
First Column,, Third Column,, Fifth Column
Notice the double-commas? They would indicate that the column to the left spans over an additional column. You'd also be able to do something like this:
First Column,,, Fourth Column
With multiple commas just spanning extra columns. Don't know how hard this would be to implement visually, but it'd sure be handy for more complicated table layouts.
Cheers! -

While the multiline is probably hard, this would be slick if we could start a line with some text or something to indicate a header row. Good show.. -
Inappropriate?I've just started using Balsamiq today. I wanted a very quick way to mock-up a data table. To do what I need I must have multiline headings as described above. I'm going to have to go back to visio or powerpoint because what i'm trying wont work without this facility. Good luck!
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?i also desperately need to be able to mockup examples like Michael's compliance report, especially concerning the subheadline rows in tables. this is a common structuring feature widely used in web apps for data input.
I’m excited

I'll look into this soon, as I too ran into this need the other day... :) -
Inappropriate?Any news on this one?
I am using tables in my mockups and they get very large, as I can't break down the header cells...
Thank you.
I’m confident

Hi Marius, we'll get to it, but it's a tricky one. We're working on fixing bugs for a little while before we add any new features. Don't worry, we'll get to it, I understand it's a needed feature. -
Thank you Giacomo, and good luck! -
Inappropriate?Hey, i would also really like this idea to be implemented.
Multiline tables are very good at displaying more information in a non-overwhelming way.
You should definitely consider some conventions/default behaviour:
I would recommend to make second line in multiline down-toned.
An example of a well-done multiline table is Google Maps driving directions (see screenshot). Here there is extra information on line 2 if relevant.
I think that your implementation could benefit from adding that convention :)

Inappropriate?Just throwing in my two cents that I'd love to see this feature. In response to: "I know that a variable-row-size grid is very hard to implement (at least in Flex)", it may be difficult in flex, but it's trivial in html, so for those of us who use balsamiq to mock up traditional web applications, it would be very useful.

Inappropriate?FWIW, I'd like to vote for the implementation of this feature to be a priority as well. Without it, this tool would have limited use for me because we do a lot of columnar data display in our web applications and our cells often span more than one row by design.

Inappropriate?Just got my Balsamiq Mockups license this week. Great product!
Doing multiple lines within a table cell is definitely my most needed feature.
Any update on how development of this is going?
I’m hopeful for this feature!

Inappropriate?Just ran into this issue today while mocking up a looooong table whose headers could stand to be compressed, and not just by renaming.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I'd love to have this, too

Inappropriate?Just another vote for enabling newlines in datagrids.
I came across Balsamiq recently while looking for a wireframing tool. As a trial I tried building a mockup of a webapp for a client using the online demo. I ended up having to paste stickies all over my mockup explaining how the table would really look, what would really be displayed, as without newlines I couldn't accurately do it.
Otherwise - wow, love the app! -
Inappropriate?Hi Murali. Don't quite understand your answer. There aren't any ways to set such attributes in the balsamiq UI. Are you referring to the underlying programming? I'm sure the change is not that simple for Peldi, otherwise he would probably have done it by now.
I’m unsure

Inappropriate?Hi guys, this is one of our fall/winter features. It's not easy because Flash is terrible at understanding the "natural size" of text. So sorry this has taken so long, I know it's important, I need it myself often!

Your effort is much much appreciated! -
Inappropriate?Looks good - just what I asked for. Amazing we actually close the loop on this stuff. Social Product Development at it's best!
- It was one year ago that I requested this feature.
I’m cant wait to use this feature
-
Inappropriate?Looks great. Exactly what I was looking for. Noticed one very minor issue.
Not sure if this is the right place to post it but here goes...
In the case of "some text\r[a link]" the link does not get rendered. The workaround is to insert a space between the newline character and the link tag as "some text\r [a link]"
I’m excited

good catch, I'll fix it ASAP
