Inappropriate?Thanks Bi-Roller, I that thought of that as well...it won't be easy to implement though. Also, how do you edit/delete these special controls? A right-click menu perhaps? Let's think about it!

Inappropriate?Right-click, delete would be great. The other issue is doing some kind of thumbnail/snapshot of the control to appear in the menu bar. Alternatively you could just put a generic icon with a user-selectable name. Like "MyApp Search" with a generic picture that says "Custom Template" or something.

Inappropriate?I would keep the standard UI controls separate from the user defined controls. I suggest a user library where you can add your own controls or downloaded controls. This makes a search for your own controls easier.
I think of the 'Components' view in google sketchup where you can add your own libraries as an example.
Another possibility: use a tree like structure (can be moved in or out of the workspace)
