Safemode for mockups...
On a few occasions, I have had a corrupt mockup cause balsamiq mockups to fail to start. I was able to get it started again by renaming the folder where the corrupt mockup was located on disk.I have seen a few times on the board of others claiming mockups wont launch due to the same reason.
Perhaps you could add a safe mode to to mockups.

- Hold down a key combination to skip loading previous mockups and configuration
- If a mockup cannot load, show an error and launch in safe mode

Inappropriate?Ouch. Safe-mode is a cop-out, an admission of guilt, a throwing your arms up in the air and saying "I don't know how to fix this".
I'd much rather:
a) minimize hanging conditions as much as possible - to do this I need people to email me the files that hang the app
b) make the app more resilient to bad XML so that it fails more gracefully
From my understanding this has been a very small problem so far (I have fixed perhaps 4 or 5 bugs in this area, in 6 months now with 1200+ customers), so if you or anyone else emails me the BMML that's failing I'd rather continue to deal with this on a case-by-case basis rather than adding more code (which will have its own set of bugs).
In the meantime, I'll see what I can do to fail more gracefully when a file doesn't open right. My options are a bit limited due to the platform I'm using, but I'll try.

It's true that the app is quite stable. Since this has happened to me a few times, I was just worried about newbies and you having to give more software licenses away for free :)1 Comment
