Can iPlayer in fullscreen override 'appearance' of screensaver?
When viewing iPlayer in fullscreen every 15 minutes or so (what is set on my PC) the screensaver appears disrupting my iPlayer viewing pleasure and reverting iPlayer back to the default window size.
I know that Microsoft Media Player 10 allows for the overriding of the screensaver from appearing, and because the iPlayer looks to use the playback mechanism of Media Player 10 I would have thought the settings/preferences would be maintained.
So is it possible for the iPlayer to override the screensaver from appearing when in fullscreen mode?

Inappropriate?Which version of iPlayer are you using? The version embedded in iPlayer web pages, the Windows software (an application called "BBC iPlayer - Download Manager") or the new Windows/Mac/Linux software (which is called "BBC iPlayer Desktop").
-
Inappropriate?I am currently using BBC iPlayer - Download Manager on a Windows XP PC with Service Pack 3.
-
Inappropriate?I'm afraid this software is no longer being developed, so the answer is almost certainly "no". I will investigate whether it's possible to include this feature in the replacement software, BBC iPlayer Desktop.
Sorry!
-
Inappropriate?I just checked, and this should already be default behaviour (i.e. fullscreen disables the screensaver) in the *new* Desktop software.

Inappropriate?Great, many thanks. Is the new Desktop software available for general release or only through the labs?
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Only labs at the moment (though anyone can sign up to use it... but content is rather limited for the next few days).
It should be on general release around February. -
Inappropriate?I'm using the iPlayer Desktop on a Mac running Leopard and am also seeing this. I think it also affects the web version on Mac. I've worked around it by delaying the screen saver in system preferences, but it would be nice not to have to do that.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I'll check again with Adobe, they told me that fullscreen will automatically disable screensavers but perhaps it doesn't work properly on Mac.
Can I just check - are you going fullscreen via the button below the video, not the maximise button at the top of the app? -
Inappropriate?Yes, in both cases using the button to the bottom right of the video.
If it is relevant I have two monitors. When using games and other video programmes, the second monitor is blacked out, but with the iPlayer the second monitor still shows what it did before. Thats not really a problem though as I can just hide the second monitor. -
Inappropriate? This is a little strange - Adobe have confirmed that fullscreen in both Flash (i.e. iPlayer steaming via website) and AIR (iPlayer Desktop) disables the system screensaver. I will continue trying to investigate this, but it sounds like there should be something else on your system which is re-activating the screensaver.
-
Inappropriate?I'll try disabling my second monitor this evening to see if that makes a difference. If not, I'm happy to install debug versions or whatever I can do to help.
-
Inappropriate?Sorry I've taken ages to reply to this. I've just realised that it isn't the screensaver that is kicking in, but rather the 'display sleep' setting.
-
Inappropriate?I was wondering whether that might be the cause - had meant to post suggesting it myself. Nice to find a solution, enjoy your fullscreen viewing!
-
Inappropriate?I have the same mac issue. I get around it by running a program in the background which turns off sleep / screensaver.
I use VLC to play a movie while turning off the volume on VLC and maximizing Iplayer. -
Inappropriate? The user seems to identified the problem, not the solution. The problem is that iplayer desktop seems to turn off the screensaver, but not the display sleep. Other programs seem to be able to do this, so it seems to be a problem with iPlayer desktop.
