I'm curious - why is there a gap between the search field and button on the homepage but no gap on the news, sport and iPlayer page

Not a definitive answer, but some explanation. The BBC uses a standard page template called Barlesque of which the search box is part

However, some sites have customised versions of the template which they host themselves. e.g. iplayer/news/homepage which can behave and look different to other pages on the site. Normally where some special feature is required like scoped search for different parts of the site.

Inappropriate?Hi, so I work on Barlesque, and only have a coulple of things to add to Gids' answer:
1) The homepage doesn't yet use Barlesque, however it will within a couple of months, at which point the gap will close (although the other design differences will remain).
2) The customisation Gids mentions is normally done through configuration of the central Barlesque system - noone will be allowed to host their own copy in the long run: Imagine the mantenence headache! :)
